Right now, I have about $300 USD to spend on a new card AND new PSU. I currently have a 8400GS teamed up with a Q6600 and G33 MoBo.

I plan on getting the Corsair 550VX, unless someone has something better, which means I only really have about $200 for the video card.

I'm thinking of getting a HD 3870, but I know the 9800 GT should be nearing release soon. I also know, however, that the 4k series from ATi may be on its way this summer.

If I wait until summer, I start my job in June. By the third week of June, I'll have $500 more to spend on a video card.

What should I do?

The card must:
- Be single slot (I can't fit dual)
- Have a long life span (in terms of both breaking down and becoming outdated)
- Play all the games I play at my resolution

My current resolution is 1440x900.
I play the following games:
> Counter Strike Source
> GMod 10
> Team Fortress 2
> World in Conflict
> Supreme Commander & Forged Alliance
> Call of Duty 4
> Battlefield 2 & 2142

Thanks for any help in advance :)

Yeah you don't need more than a 8800 GT for your needs. No need to waste $500 on a video card. Unless you are obsessed with Crysis, I'd not wait around for the next-gen stuff - nothing to play it with that would maximize its use, and by the time games that do maximize usage emerge, a video card refresh will be out.

+1 for 8800GT. I have the stock clock of the 8800gt 600/900 version and it runs tf2, css, and cod4 to nearly flawless @ 1440x900 on all high settings, 2xaa cod4, max aa in source engine, and 16xaf . I use the 174.74 driver.

8800GT

Well its does the job @ 1680x1050 even with crysis.

Pretty playable at my res all High 2xAA

(not saying that I have 60FPS :p ) but eh. Supreme commander Maxed full AA 1680x1050 Zoom in/out with 500Units and its doesnt lag. Choppy when I Zoom in/out nuke bomb but lol, whats the point ?
