I have most of my system picked out, but I have come to an abrupt halt due to some things I have read. So far my system specs include: (items with stars next to them are what i am asking for help upon as far as if I can get a better product for the price.)

Memory-$190: 1gb(2x512) of PQI***
HD-$90: 160gb Seagate 7200
VC-$405: Albatron nVIDIA GeForce 6800 GT Video Card, 256MB GDDR3***
CPU-$230: AMD Athlon 64 3200+ 2.0GHz (939)
Mobo-$132: Asus A8V Deluxe Socket939 ATX
PSU-$59: Rosewill 550W Black Mirror***

***-Denotes parts I am questioning if I can get a better part for same price, possibly a few dollars over.

I'd switch that Rosewill for an Enermax, OCZ Powerstream or one of the other recommended PSU's in the PSU sticky buying guide.
 
Id go for a better brand of power supply such as Antec, Enermax, Fortron, Ultra, OCZ, or PC power and cooling.
 
If it was my computer, I would choose different memory. That memory you are looking at seems really expensive. You can get a 1GB Mushkin dual pack for only $136 and it will be better than PQI. I've never heard of that brand.

I would switch your VIA chipset motherboard for an NForce3 Ultra chipset motherboard. I have had nothing but back luck with VIA chipset motherboards. $145 I just put together a new computer for my dad with the MSI Neo2 Platinum board and it runs great. Also, on MSI's web site, it shows that the motherboard was tested with Mushkin memory.

I would not get a Rosewill PSU. I would get Antec or Enermax.

Everything else looks great.
 
You can save a little money by getting an Antec case with an Antec PSU. My dad's computer is very similar to yours and this is the case we used. This one is very quiet.

And I would get either an eVGA or BFG 6800 GT and not the albatron. Leadtek has a wicked cooling solution also.
