Due to the facts that I am graduating college, getting a sweet tax return, and a little bit of other misc cash, I am looking to get an Lcd. It is time. My good ol' Sony CPD-400 monitor, which weighs a lovely 75 lbs, is going to be the backup. I wanted to get one last summer, but they were way too much. Same with last Christmas. Now it's time. I've been reading a few forums (saw the 'show your lcd setup', and btw, all you people who own like 17 lcd monitors and quadrupled-dual 2gig video cards, yeah, you suck) but anyway I have a general idea but I just wanted doublecheck...
My main reason for getting the lcd is desk space and comsmetic appeal. This off'white tope color ain't working nor is lugging the beast anytime I move. But with that said, I don't want to have a loss in quality. Here's what I am currently running :
AMD 64 3000+ on Abit KV8Pro, 1 Gig Kingston value, Radeon 9800 128 Pro, Sb live plat 5.1, and so on...
BUDGET - Still not sure...at least 500ish, but maybe as much as 800. Depends on how much I want to work this summer
My target is this -- 17-19 inch, with good text display because I write a fair amount on it and will be working on a book this summer. But I also game so that is a priority as well.
I play HL2, EQ 2 and other games. I've noticed I get the best balance of framerate and quality with a 1024x 768 resolution. Now I have done some tweaking, a few bios settings and downloaded Omege drivers, but I haven't overclocked or flashed my 9800 (have to dblcheck on the core) so I imagine I could push my video card a little more if needs be. Partially I am worried that the lcd I would buy would have a higher native resolution that my system could run at a high enough framerate.
I imagine with the money if i were careful I could get an lcd AND a new video card, the problem is my motherboard doesn't have PCI express, which as we all know came out so companies could charge 100 more for AGP (conspiracy! ) but I digress. The ATI 800 XT looks pretty good but I can't find for a good enough price. Perhaps I could wait until the 512 cards come out, but this is my last free summer before I enter a career and I want to do some of the best gaming of my life

-Don't care about widescreens
-I tend to be a 'get what you pay for' consumer.
