Hey, i know this is the Intel side of forum so dont give me bad comments about stating some of the AMD stuff i thought about, but rather give me serious answers why i shuld go with Intel over AMD.

thnx

alright so my friend needs a new machine and he is undecided on what to get. Now some of the things that are ruled out are Prescott and Barton, prescott being too hot and bartons too slow. Also this isnt a top notch machine, its somewhere in the middle.

What i was gonna recommend to him was a P4 3.0E Ghz with an ABIT Max3 875PE board because i know intel better, but i told him to ask about AMD because i have no clue about them. He told me he was told that A64 AMD would be cheaper. so thats my question what would be better? Lets say for a sub $400-$450 mobo+CPU+RAM combo? 2x256MB of ram btw for dual channel.

please dont post any fan boy comments i need a true facts about these CPUs, hes gamer, and he also downloads alot of movies, and stuff from the internet, burns DVD and so on.

Would he benefit from HT? I know that 3.0E with abit mobo and 3200 corsair ram would cost him about $390-$450 depending on whether its 865PE or 875PE, would amd with similar/better performance be cheaper?

could u fill me in on some new Intel stuff? if there is a better choice then what i stated above? thnx

thank you so much, sorry for the long post. you are a great help

ttyl

hey, i just found out that 3.0E are prescotts, excuse my unawereness but i didnt know that, so basicly 3.0C were the last Northwood processors right? so does the 3.0E get so hot too? and can 3.0E be run on chipset 875PE?

and also what are good current motherboards for prescotts? and chipsets? thnx

He would probably be alot better off going AMD64 with possibly the 754 socket set... They don't offer dual channel like the 939 but are cheaper and amd processors aren't really memory bandwidth limited anyway. With the 754 you could just buy a 512 stick and then buy another one later when you got the cash so you could have a gig of memory and still do better in games.

Just from looking at price watch the athlon 64 3000 is 145 while while the 3 variants listed at 3 ghz for the intel prescott are from 169-170 and i'd go out on a limb and say the athlon 64 would do better htan them in games or atleast thats what all the benchmarks show.

Side note: also hear thatt he 3000 is a good OC'er as well.

A64 for gaming. I highly recommend it. Price/performance ratio is great...

I've definitely been considering A64 for my next upgrade, but I still get a little concerned hearing people say that their system feels "slower" or "not as smooth" in everyday Windows tasks. But then again, I mainly game.

Consider if he does more video editing or gaming. I concur with others in regards to gaming, but when it comes to encoding, P4 is your best bet.

Tell your friend we said to enjoy whatever new rig he ends up with....

Regards...

It's true the Pentium 4s are great at encoding things, but ask yourself! Does those five minutes you save really matter? According to the "professional app" benchmarks I've seen, the Athlon64 generally performs better at the interface, the real-time things, with the P4 coming out on top when it comes to rendering or encoding. I'd rather have as smooth an experience as possible and then wait an extra 5%... But, obviously, this varies greatly with different applications.
