Found an open box shuttle on newegg with a G31 chipset. So given that it was cheaper than the the cheapest shuttle (with PCI-e) that has a 945GC chipset, I jumped on it.

I was originally planning on getting an E2180 but, given the money I was saving I grabbed an E7200 Wolfdale chip.

I'm psyched about the CPU, first 45nm CPU I've ever had... I think I skipped the 65nm range completely.


What kinda of improvements should I see with this compared to my old Opty 144?

Especially in something like compiling under linux.
 
you will most definitely see an improvement. Also, those wolfdales are hella good overclockers, should see how much you can get out of it and post it on here.

jand ust a small warning as well, shuttles have a propritary 5 pin usb header.. so you have to buy converters to normal headers through shuttle if you have alot of internal USB things.

Yea, I've already read about that. I'm not gonna be using a card reader or anything so I should have no need.

As for overclocking, I've heard that particular model isn't the best for it. So I was wondering about the BSEL mod to knock it up to 1333FSB, is this viable? I see no reason the shuttle couldn't handle it, I'm more worried about the availability of info ofBSEL mods for the E7200.

I've already checked benchys and these things do better at about 3GHz or more, so if I'd like to hit that 3GHz line with a BSEL mod.
 
i don't see why you couldn't just bump the fsb in the bios to 333. The chipset supports it so you should just be able to change that in the bios :confused::confused:

Whats the BSEL mod? I'm thinking about getting either an E7200 or E8200....and this mod sounds interesting. Can anyone clear this up for me here or in PMs?

It varies from chip to chip, some you have to connect pins on the CPU, and some you just block them off (so far, this is what I've found with the E7200).

It's used to knock the FSB up from say, 1066 to 1333MHz or 800 to 1066MHz. Effectively overclocking the chip with (usually) no consequence without ever touching the FSB in the BIOS.

The reason most people do it is because, either their board is hitting a a wall during overclocking or the board doesn't support overclocking at all.

EDIT: Heres the one for the E7200. Seems I'm having a hard time finding anything else on google.
