Decent sata controller card for under $35

I hope this is the right forum...

I'm looking for a decent PCI sata controller card for under $35. I'd prefer 4 ports. I will not use raid 5, and most likely not 0 or 1. I simply need more sata ports as only 2 are locked on my motherboard, and I overclock.

I don't need an uber fancy card here...just something that works fine with my 7.2k 250GB sata hd's.

Well, as much as people might rag on it, i'm still quite happy with Sil3114 based controllers. However, you're going to be hard pressed to find a 4-port model from either Silicon Image or Promise under $40. I would hit up e-bay or the FS/T forums if you're trying to do this on the cheap.
 
I decided to go with the controller I posted above. It has decent reviews and there is even a firmware upgrade to allow raid 5 (if I ever wanted to do this, that is).

Promise has a card, the TX4 I believe that has 4 ports and is SATA300! Its like $60 from www.directron.com.

Show me one conclusive benchmark that indicates a difference between interface speeds when you aren't pushing anywhere near the limit.

When you're writing programs in BASIC, sure enough. Unless you're gonna use next-generation drives with this same controller, there's no way you'll hit a limitation. And most of the perceived speed comes from seek times, which isn't really dependent on how many megabytes per second you can transfer.

 
We've had ATA-100 for how long now?
We're just barely getting to the point where that interface (with overhead figured in) is becoming a bottleneck. I'm not saying at some point in the future SATA 150 will not be obsolete and inadaquete; my point is that at the current time and for some time to come, it is more that sufficient.

maybe when bill said that he meant 640k gigs of ram, which would probably be true; if motherboards came even close to supporting it

very true. Sorry i didnt mean to convey that I was "downplaying" your particular hardware suggestion. All my suggestion was, for all intents and purposes, to offer headroom for upgradeability. Considering that current and emerging drives matched with proper system setups are only bursting around 200Gbs and only sustaining significantly less than that, sata150 should suffice anyone system for the time being and as you said for some time to come.
 
My point has nothing to do with the hardware suggestion. My point is that the hype of SATA II drives me insane when it's not even a standard yet!
