Decent PSU for cheap

Well the 300watt antec that came with my case died a few days ago. I opened it up and there was a big black spot on the PCB so its def. toast...

So I figured it was time for an upgrade. I was looking at buying an expensive antec psu (that true power 380) but its a little too rich for my blood, and after my other antec died... well, I'm not too excited about the prospect.

Can anyone reccomend a decent psu that puts out at least 350 watts that isnt too expensive? Or a decent brandname? The only names I can recognize are Antec and Enermax... any other good brands?

thanks,

Dan

get a 350W Whisper PSU from Enermax.. pretty cheap and it works.
I also saw some decent Thermaltake PSU's (420W) for about the same price as the enermax 350W.

i second the thermaltake 420 idea. Even the 360w model looks good.

thanks for the help guys, I will check those out. If you have any more suggestions let me know, I'm doing some price comparisons and a little more research before coming to a final conclusion.

Thanks again,

Dan

I'll put in a vote for Antec. That three year warranty is a godsend, given that most PSUs don't last half that length of time (at least for me). They're also very nice quality. I'm using a TruePower 430w, and it works great.

I would go with an Antec True Power 350-430w, Fortron 350-400w, or Enermax 350-450w. Most systems will never use over 300w.

How much does it weigh?
Don't ever buy a PSU with no specifications listed... it's universally stupid. And PSU reviews are a joke for the most part because what is there to review w/o a lab? Load? How many of these review sites have large wattage resistors to test output claims? Also, if the Achieve was such a great power supply, the manufacturers could bump up the price and still get people to buy it. Hence, we have the PCP&C and Antecs of the PSU world, not to mention Enermax and Vantec as well. Fortron PSUs are going up in price as of late as a direct result of the enthusiast community accepting them as a good PSU.

Oh, and your proof to invalidate my suggestion is????
When you don't have first-hand knowledge, as you've shown, don't crap on someone's post.

I have 3 of these Achieve PSs in use, and know of 4 other individuals that have them installed, all of us yielding perfect results.

A vote for a Tt supply; it's what I'm running in my #1 rig (see sig). $49.00 shipped from the egg (last time i checked). Rails are spot on under load, measured with my trusty Fulke DVM. The dual thermo controlled fans are very quiet and work great.

Agreed. I now have 2 of these, and both are excellent quality, with steady rails, and very quiet.

I just purchased an aspire 500w p/s from newegg for 55shipped.

read some good reviews on it (here and googled)

how quiet is ur PSU? can u hear it when all other components are off?

It seems to be rather quiet, since it didn't add noticably to the case noise when I installed it. It also has two molex connectors specifically for fans that thermally control the speed, which can help cut down on noise from big case and slot fans.

....not quite. The fans are thermally controlled irregardless of how the molex's are connected. What's provided is a tach output that you can plug into your MoBo to monitor the actual PSU fan speed. If you choose not to connect the Molex connectors, the fans still are thermally controlled.

FWIW - I'm 99.871% sure that Enlight OEM's the Tt supplies. Over the last three years, I've probably screwed together over a hundred Enlight 7237 cases with their 350 / 360 watt supplies. Not one has crapped out. And - these are lab machines / workstations that aren't shut off, and frankly the lab machines have been known to take a beatin' while hardware debugging is going on. A good reliability record, IMHO.....

... I wasn't talking about the review, I was refering to the vendor. Furthermore, 1 good review does not a good power supply make. I'm open to other brands, well that is when my *ENTIRE* system isn't resting in the balence. Finally, some quotes from your fav review:

"Manufacturer ratings often have little in common with real-world application, especially for power supplies. Companies have no set industry-recognized procedure in testing a design for its peak stable power ratings."

"we were greeted by the typical layout associated with low-cost power supplies manufactured in China."

"This Achieve unit lacks most of the additional features found with more expensive solutions from companies like Enermax. There are no sleeves present upon any of the internal or external cables and connections. The cabling itself is entirely based upon lightweight 20-gauge stranded copper wire. While sufficient for desktop usage, we would prefer to see a heavier gauge wire utilized for certain critical parts, especially when attempting to use the power supply in a mission-critical situation. "

"The fans are rated at approximately 51 dBa, so noise is of little concern as compared to the additional case fans found with most ATX systems." Idiots...

"SiSoft Sandra 2004 was placed into a continuous loop during testing to measure voltage fluctuations under load." Idiots again, using software to evaluate PSU w/o VOM or multimeter

Accordingly, I put this review in the pile with... "Whoa, we got free stuff, but now we got to rite about it online"

SeaSonic has a very nifty, almost completely silent 400w psu that's cheaper than those expensive Antecs. It's not very flashy, but it has a 120mm fan and a ton of plugs, plus 80% efficiecy and active PFC. AOpen has a similar one for slighly less.
