Deathstar dilemma

Hello, i've had a 75GB deathstar for ~5 years now :eek: . No problems whatsoever, and from what i've heard on forums around the internet the failure rate seems to be 95% ? :confused:

Should i be thinking about backing up all data and replacing the hard disk, or just let it be? the only valueable data is my music (< 20GB) will fit on my iPod! ;)
 
I have trashed at least 5 of them. Get a new hd before its too late. It WILL fail.
 
The only Deskstar series that had issues were the 60 & 75 GXP series. I still have two of them in use and they work fine. If you have one thats affected, there is a firmware update that resolves the issue that caused them to fail.

Of course IMO the "Deathstar" thing was blown out of proportion, ALL hard drives WILL fail eventually, and the Deskstars were accelerated by high heat situations, if your drive stays cool it'll likely last just as long as any other drive.

No no, I replace alot of IBM/Hitachi Deathstars in various capacities. IBM drives are used in a number of OEM machines and I replace alot of them in and out of warranty. IMO they are teh worst and most unreliable drives you can get. Replace that 75GB drive before its too late.
 
well i'm going to build another computer soon so this will be for family. so i'll just backup and they will replace it when/if it fails
 
Just use it as a secondary/backup drive. Don't put anything too critical on it. At five years old, it's getting to the point that wear and tear could kill it if it's been heavily used.

As for the IBM hate: it's really getting old. This stuff was fixed years ago; you'll find a lot of drives that were never fixed with the firmware update still dying, four and five years after they went into use. You know what? A LOT of drives die in the same time frame.
 
You know, I have a 40gb ibm as well, ran it and still do. I never heard about the firmware update but it is mostly just a backup drive now. It has run perfectly for me, some fail some don't. Personally I will never buy maxtor again, I have never had a Maxtor drive not fail, but lots of people love them. I figure that when you find something you like you keep buying from them and when you find something you hate you stop buying from them, and thus Capitalism lives on.
 
it's honestly just luck :confused: ;)
there's so many stories on the internet about people having 5 hard disks fail on them within the first week all SAME brand etc etc etc :rolleyes: and others with the same story but ANOTHER brand, so the madness continues! :rolleyes:
 
I had 3 drives and every one of the bastards has failed or is failing with bad sectors. Sure is nice that they were the fastest drives available at the time...also the most unreliable. :mad:

I would jump ship if I were you. But I'm a little jaded by the whole experience.
 
I used a pair of 75GXP's as a RAID zero up until about 4 months ago when i sold the comp they were in.....so a little over what 4 1/2 years....running 24/7.

Must dissagree here. I've been refurbishing machines and laptops for a living for 3 years now, and i've done approximatly 40-50 thousand machines, and IBM/Hitachi drives are one of the least I ever see failed.

IBM/Hitachi also had/have a near monopoly on laptop hard drives as well where reliability is cricital, they also shine there too. I see far more Toshiba and Fujitsu laptop drives failed and theres far fewer of them I see.

We pile dead drives into 4x4x4 foot boxes to be sold off for scrap aluminium, thats thousands of dead drives, and I can guarantee less than 10% are IBM/Hitachi units.
