Dealing with voltage increases?

Well I've started overclocking my system in signature (3000+ msi k8n neo plat corsair xl for those of us who are lazy).

First step was to turn down mem divider all the way so I could focus on cpu. Turned up mem voltage to 2.8 and just left it there (so I dont' forget about it later), and turned cpu voltage pretty high (1.7), and just used clockgen w/ a running prime95 and started going.

And I got to 2.6+ghz and it was still running stable, however the temp was thru the roof (motherboard monitor was reporting 65+), so I got scared and backed off. It was at this point that I realized that the voltage was what was doing most of the heat, so I rebooted into bios, set it to default, and said to myself "lets see how far we go on stock voltage"

and this is where I'm at now, running 245 fsb, lowered memory divider, temp barely getting above 55C under full load, and I THINK it's stable (haven't run prime for any length of time, but it's not obviously crashing). My HSF is an slk948u/panaflo H1A, so unless I move up to water I'm cooling as effectively as possible (case temp is a little high, 43C, but that'll be fixed when I get a second fan). Main questions are:

Should I stay at stock voltage and just live with the 450-500mhz overclock that I'm going to get? This has the benefits of probably letting me run my corsair at stock timings (or close), in 1:1 divider.
If I should increase the voltage, how much? What should I be aiming for at this point, since the goal is 1:1 memory divider? Would it be better for me to run 245fsb 1:1 divider, or like 272fsb, lower the multiplier to 9, and use a higher divider?

so you are saying that among these choices:

245fsb, 2.5-3-3 timings, everything in sync
295fsb, same timings, memory on the 166/200 divider, cpu multiplier at 9x

that the 245 would be better (given that the 295 would even boot, which I doubt it will).

given that I'm stable at 245, 1-1 with 2.5-3-3 timings, what's the next step? 250 is pretty close to the limit of XL, so I'm not sure where to go from here, even if i were to do something like get watercooling

1:1 is what AMD's thrive on, so you would want to keep it there. If you want to OC further, work on higher-rated RAM most likely.

What can I get that will run higher/better/faster than corsair XL?

EDIT: also, is it normal to be doing ~470mhz overclock on stock voltage?

I'm not so sure if it's normal, looking at the 3000+ a64 article, they're good OCers :p.

You might want to look into Corsair XMS rated at ddr 4000 or so, I think the timings are looser, but sheer bandwidth will compensate for that

actually, you could just loosen the timings on your corsair XL memory to, say, 3-4-4-8 and try running higher FSB then. should be alright. if not, then running a memory divider on an a64 isn't nearly as bad as it is on a axp, because of the integrated memory controller in the chip and all. so you should be alright running a higher FSB with a memory divider. but try loosening the timings before you go buy new memory. that XL stuff is just about the best DDR there is now, so buying pc4000 probably won't help much, if any, especially because you're already able to run 245 FSB at better timings than the pc4000 stuff will do at 250.

If about 30 FSB matters to him, the hyperx would do him well. I run mine at 270-ish

A bunch of compiled information on oc'ing the A64

One thing that some of you had said is that AMD likes the 1:1 memory ratio. This may have been true with the AXP line of cpus. But with the integrated memory controller, there is hardly a noticable affect of running a divider.

With the information from your first post, if you are running a divider and running the HTT at 245, thats getting your ram back up to 200mhz again.

Ok, well I'm going to start a new thread, because I'm getting into things beyond the scope of this thread now :)
