I don't know if this is possible on a laptop with no HDMI in, but is there anyway to test the screen before populating a barebone system? My last one had some stuck pixels, and I didn't know it until after I spend a few hours putting everything together etc.

I dont know of anything, but I feel your pain.

I did a LCD upgrade (720p to 900p) on my m14x, and it took FOUR screens before I got one without a stuck pixel.

With cross shipping replacements it took me a month. Was very frustrating. Felt bad for the the company because they paid shipping both ways for 4 screens. The LCD was only $60 shipped.

Cook up a Linux LiveUSB stick with an image viewer and some PNGs of test images.

its barebones, i think he wants to know if he can get the lcd powered up without any internals.

This is correct. I don't want to risk installing/removing everything time and time again to get a good barebones without any bad pixels.
