I know these are common threads but I think it's pertinent with Dead Space considering the controversy around the PC version's controls.

I'm looking at getting this game very soon (next few days kinda soon) and am having trouble deciding whether to get it for the 360 or the PC. Usually the PC wins with these selections, but the control issue bugs me and my rig isn't exactly a beast, although it is upgradeable.

My system is in my signature. I'd appreciate opinions. Did EA fix the control problems on the PC version? Is my PC likely to beat out the 360 version in performance and/or image quality? Or is the 360 version a safer option?

I have it on PC. I haven't seen or played the 360 version, but with regards to controls, i find it much better (and intuitive) using a controller than the keyboard.

Enemies are kinda slow in this game anyway, and my head hurts when playing 3rd person shooters close to the screen.
Overall, I'd recommend getting this for the 360. The pc version might be cheaper, though you'd have to deal with limited installs.

Just go with either console variant, the experience is pretty much similar on both and you don't have to deal with (from what I've heard) badly ported controls on PC.

Play it on the 360, I find it near unplayable on PC.

I've only played the 360 version, but I had no complaints. One of the things about Dead Space, and I believe this is a design decision, is that the controls are not 'fast' like Gears or other 3rd person over the shoulder games. It's more of a RE4 control scheme, and the controls seem a little sluggish, but I think thats to ratchet up the 'panic' factor.

Which it does quite nicely.

The PC version looks a lot better than the xbox demo (Haven't got the full game on xbox sorry). Although there is no AA on the PC version, the xbox has even more jaggies on display, especially just looking at Isaac's? suit. Textures seem less detailed too but this might be just the xbox demo.

The mouse is still rather sluggish on PC, even turning off v-sync but aiming is better than xbox analogues in this state. Controls are crap for PC otherwise (inventory system).

There is no controversy. A few simple tweaks and it leaves the PC game with amazing controls. I agree that the the tweaking shouldn't be necessary, but it ends up being a great game.

I'd say if you've got a reasonably sized TV or projector set up, get it for 360.
EDIT: The controls just make a lot more sense on a gamepad IMO.
EDIT 2: 110 inch wide screen.
Here it is on my HT set up.

What level suit is that?

To the OP I recommend on PC with a gamepad or on console. With a gamepad. :p

Dead Space is going to be on Steam soon and it won't have SecuROM.

I'd say get it for the PC and use a gamepad if you want to. Personally, I have no issues with the controls. I've played both the console and PC versions and found the PC version to be easier to control. The game was easier because of this, though--the enemies were easy to kill.

I've got it for the 360 and the PC. I'm going to play it on the 360 all the way through since I've got a 52" TV and big sound system but if you don't have a large display or speakers then I'd say to go ahead and get it for the PC. It looks a bit cleaner being able to run at a higher resolution but you should probably play with a gamepad, preferably a 360 gamepad since the buttons will be set properly. If you have a Playstation pad and a USB adapter there's a post around here I made that has config settings to get the buttons setup like the 360 controller.

You can plug a TV or Projector into a PC. You can plug a gamepad into a PC.

Thanks for the replies...I only have a 17" 1024x768 CRT monitor that I can connect to my 360 via VGA, but I get regular access to a Bravia 100cm-ish LCD for the 360 at my mother's place. So it might make sense to get it for the 360 then.

Thanks for the help peoples :)

im installing this right now, i hope its fun, it looks pretty cool, i also heard the controls are sluggish to up the panic factor

they arn't sluggish just not the norm as far as controls go I have the 360 version but wanted the ps3 version as their downloadable suit is awsome looking either way you go the game is awsome enjoy!

geniv2 wins thread :)

But seriously, the game is meant to be played on a gamepad and on the 360 controller it feels sweet.

I play it on PC with the gamepad but on a Westy 37" so its all good.

get it for PC because you can play it like this :)

I only got the PC version so I can't comment on the 360 version. comming from a FPS gamer.. the controls of deadspace I initially find it slugglish and wierd/unresponsive.

but it's just that they do it "differently" and after 20 minutes of setting my mouse sensitity I don't really feel that it is bad. and aiming and killing baddies is way more accurate/faster than using an analog stick.

supposely if you disable Vsync it will have more responsive mouse movement.

I play with a keyboard and a logitech g9 mouse

I'd go with the PC unless you really prefer shooters on a console for some reason. I didn't have any issues with the controls, but then I never tried playing with vsync on(and never felt a need to).

Hmm, after reading this perhaps I will have to give it another try on PC.
When I tried it out the first time it like my character was drunk/ incredibly unresponsive.

geniv2, how are you accomplishing that? I thought with the new drivers, you can only split the screen amongst 2 monitors?

It will look better on PC and you will be using a 360 controller either way. PC controls are horrible.

Just beat this tonight. Amazing game!

I played through it on PC. Controls did seem sluggish at first, just disable vsync and raise mouse sensitivity=no problem.

ive been a pc gamer forever but have dead space for 360 and love it.. so much fun on a big screen

Well I can obviously stick my 360 wired controller into my PC that way but I've read that even then the controls aren't as fluid as the 360 because of whatever they buggered up with the PC version. I think the game would look better on the 360 than my particular rig, cause I'm only gaming on a criminally low resolution and probably won't be able to afford to upgrade it for at least six months anyway (outside of maybe some extra RAM).

And geniv2 that is a sweet setup if there ever was one. :)

Judging from your profile, I would say that the 360 version would give you a better experience. I don't think your gfx are quite up to the task, but check some reviews.

However, the PC version is likely to be found for significantly cheaper (though it's only $6 cheaper at amazon's marketplace for $38 shipped).

As for the pc controls issue, there really isn't a problem with them. If you turn off vsync, the game becomes very responsive and plays very very well. I played through using KB and mouse and never felt like I wanted a controller. The menus in the game(inventory, store, bench, elevator etc..) are clearly geared for use with a controller, but it's not a pain to use with KB and mous

If you want the best experience, get the 360 version.

If you want to save some money so you can upgrade your comp sooner, get the pc version.

Thanks for the thorough feedback :) I'm in Australia, and EA have a '2 for $120' deal going. A friend wants to get Mirror's Edge, and I obviously want Dead Space, so we're getting our games for $60 each...which is cheap for Australia standards. The game retails at $99.95 on both PC and console.

This will be the last game I buy in a while...I want to save up for a while so I can drop some money into - first and foremost - a decent monitor, and then into my system. Christmas vouchers enable me to get Dead Space now, so waiting isn't really effective at the moment.

On the ps3 it doesn't seem to have any AA (i've tried the demo).:( Does the xbox version have? Or the PC version (option for AA)?

heres how my system looks playing till the end of the game.

I have to admin having triple monitor and huge FOV makes the game MUCH EASIER

btw: for those that found the camera annoying it takes like 30 min - 1 hour to really get use and feel comfortable with it. set your mouse sensitive if you feel it's too slow or twoo fast.

- for those that think mouse movement during aiming mode is TOO SLOW. I have the same problem too initially. becase I am looking at it as a 1st person perspective. but it's more of a way u control it. Set your mouse look sensitivity to a comfortable level first. when u aim, you mouse movement will feel very slow. you are not meant to move far in aim mode. you get the general direction of your shot with the mouse look and then u aim to make fine pinpoint shots.
if u need to move the aiming farther and faster, unaim first then get the general direction again. once u get the new general area then u aim.
Once I realized that the game control becomes much easier and somewhat natural.
btw: disable Vsync to prevent mouselag.

well hope my bit of info helps anyone beetching about the controls. (I was like that at first, since I was comming from a 1st person gamer)

I'd second playing it on the PC.

It's fine as long as you disable v-sync and use a gamepad.

I hate you. Here I am trying not to buy anymore toys and suddenly I need more monitors and that adapter box!

The pros & cons of both

360
Pro - downloadable content
Con - low res textures
Pro - quick & easy to use the best weapons/suits from DLC right from near the start of the game

PC
Con - buggy/crashes, needs some major patching
Pro - high res textures
Con - no downloadable content
Con - use of key remapping tools just in order to change certain keys
