Holy crap. I just bought Dead Space retail for $39.99 this afternoon. This is the most impressed I've been with the opening of a game since Half-Life 2. In the first half hour I've seen some of the best real-time graphics ever done in a game, seen a few interesting sci-fi concepts, oodles of incredibly intricate design. Not to mention, several truly scary moments with awesome gore and physics. The graphics look as good as that Final Fantasy movie that cost $120 million to make in 2001.

I feel like I've already gotten my money's worth! Anything after this first half hour is just gravy!

I had a problem with the game showing a black screen on my 52" LCD. All I had to do was start it on the Dell monitor instead, and up the resolution setting, then switch the display back over to the large panel. For people searching for the problem "I can hear sound but only see a black screen in Dead Space for PC" or "No picture, no graphics in Dead Space on PC" this is a possible solution. I had not realized my big panel could not do 800x600. I suppose without a second LCD you could write your own custom config with a higher resolution before running the game for the first time?

I had no control problems. It looks like people with the varying mouse speed problem don't have Vsync enabled. I love the over the shoulder perspective. The acceleration on the mouse is a bit annoying, but I'm sure I'll get used to it.
 
It's a good experience, but for me the combat was just a bit too repetitive; hear alien, shoot aliens limbs/head, shoot crawling alien, rinse & repeat. The bosses mixed it up a bit.

It wasn't as immersive for me as Half-Life 2, or other games, but it was above average.
 
I loved it. Great game. I agree that they could have put in a little bit more variation, but overall it's a really fun game.
 
I had too many input problems (slow mouse movement) so I pretty much gave up on playing.
Even with vsync off and the sensitivity all the way up, there was a lot of input lag: I would push a key, then an eternity would pass, then the character would finally move.

This applies for both keyboard and mouse inputs.
Also, the rotational sensitivity on the mouse is far too low.

The controls were just a nightmare. Literally game breaking.
 
Protip:
Plasma Cutter is your best friend. Treat it accordingly (max it out and you're unstoppable).
 
Fully agree with you, OP! I'm in chapter 9 and loving every minute of it. I only play it at night with the lights off and my headphones on to maximize the horror factor. :D
 
Waste of time IMHO, ~30% of the screen shouldn't be taken up by the character. Quite repetitive aswell. Not even going to start on the absolute atrocity that was the controls...

Agree with first 2 parts, but I played only a bit with 360 controller, so don't know how PC controls are.
Dead Space is WAY too slow for me.

they do that for the scare effect. anyways. my favorite game of the year hands down. glad you liked it op.
 
This game ranks up there as one of the best FPS single player experiences I've ever had. Bioshock, Half life 2, Dead Space, Crysis+Warhead, COD4 - top tier gaming to me.

When I played Dead Space, I had to use a program to enable proper key mapping (glovePIE) and also use D3DOverrider + vsync in video control settings to get things running as they should - otherwise the game worked flawlessly. (had ati HD4870)

The reason the character takes up so much screen space is by DESIGN CHOICE. It adds a sense of helplessness or scare factor. The game is very well thought out.

The only major gripe I have is how sluggish the mouse is. I doubt that was intentionally designed that way - after an hour you get used to it though so not a huge mark against.

I definitely look forward to Dead Space 2
 
I think Dead Space is immersive in a horror-movie kind of way, instead of the usual first-person protagonist kind of way like HL2. I really liked it :)

I dont think the game has too many problems, I quickly fixed the vsync thing and set the mouse speed at a likeable level, and off I went :)
 
aha, called out. You're right. I meant, so I can keep my entire group of favorite games in the same catagory, PERSON SHOOTER or just SHOOTER games.
 
I finally decided to pick up the game last night and against my general terms, bought it for xbox360. I agree with the OP. Fantastic game and already worth my $60.

Surprisingly, I like it on the xbox360. Actually, I'm going to play now.

Concur, the camera is terrible, the awkward 3rd person view behind your character is a console convention that ruins the entire experience. If first person, it could be been a decent improved Doom-like experience.
 
I enjoyed every minute of Dead Space. A great example of how to take the formula from a best-in-class game (Resident Evil 4) and make it your own.

I just don't see how. The PC version is better in every way and you can use a 360 controller on it anyways if you felt the need.

Yup. Sleeper of the year in my books. Hell, damn near game of the year for me. I was completely taken by surprise. I always love it when a game sneaks in under my radar and catches me off guard. I should really stop following games so closely.
 
Ok ok.. lets not get in the pc vs. console debate. My 360 has been neglected lately, that's the only reason I bought it on the 360 and not the PC.

After playing more (Chapter 7), there is no reason you shouldn't spend the money on this game. Very much worth every penny.
 
I've heard good things about this game, so when I finish fallout 3 and bioshock, I will buy it!

Securom is completely manageable these days. There are plenty of removal tools and easy ways around install limits.
Even so, a single player game like Dead Space is one you will only play a few times. I cant see anyone installing the game 3-4 times.

Sucurom is a pain, and I loath it in principle, but Dead Space is to good a game to skip for that reason alone.
Thats like walking away from a horny and ready smoking hot blond who can fit a whole banana in her mouth simply because you dont want the hassle of removing her bra.

all i can say is your missing out on the sleeper hit of the year.

I wouldnt say herpes, as sucurom is a non-issue with little effort.

Im just saying that we are seeing more and more excellent games with badass copy-protection. I guess its up to everyone to decide if they are going to skip on good games because of it.
 
Losing the ability to play your legally purchased game because you installed it too many times or because you have legitimate software like Process Explorer running in the background is not a "non-issue."

I never had any issue with securom. There has always been easy ways to bypass and remove it. If its such a problem and your inept enough to not find a work around, then sure, go ahead and refuse to play games in hopes that your protest will sway the decisions of these corporations to protect their product.
Copy protection is a very real thing that we all have to deal with. Securom is more hardassed then some protection, but its protecting over 200 million disks and that number will keep increasing.

Dont get me wrong, I dont like securom.

At the same time, your refusing to support the makers of excellent games because your against their method of protecting their product.

Don't worry, as I play some of the countless kick-ass games along with millions of others, in the back of my head, the guilt of not joining your protest against securom will be eating away at my soul. Lucky for me, I dont care.

Google + 5min had my securom on dead space nullified. Supporting game, playing game, not harmed by securom. Pure win.
 
This game irritated me with it's constant "oh another thing went wrong, go fight some hordes of monsters and fix it". It never ended. Everytime I finished something, something else went wrong. It was just not a pleasant or entertaining experience but felt more like work. The fighting was repetitive. No incentive to use the other weapons, just the plasma cutter the whole way through. All dark spaces and Doom-like sci-fi cliches in narrow boring corridors. The only times I really enjoyed the game and level design was the wide-open bridge, and all the parts out in space. I wish the whole game was in a ship that was half open to space.

You realize that for the vast majority of that list of games, the SecuROM used is not the same, controversial version of SecuROM that violates fair use rights with arbitrary restrictions such as install limits, rendering the list completely irrelevant...right?

And by doing so, you violated the EULA as well as the DMCA. I believe that the HardOCP forums has a rule against advocating illegal behavior. Should I report your post to a mod?
 
I just finished DS and can say it was a great time. Sure, it had some minor flaws, but I'm very satisfied with the experience. I don't think the game has much replay value, but I'm sure I'll go back and mess around with it.
 
I don't demand any replay value from games these days. I'm too busy. I just want a fantastic experience the first time through!

Just finished chapter 4 after about a half dozen play sessions. Still into it!
 
If you buy the game on steam, you don't have to worry about reinstalling it 3-4 times before you can't play it anymore, right?
