Dead space crash issues

Just bought Dead Space on the steam deal, fire it up and go to change the screen resolution from the default 800x600 to 2560x1600 and it crashes, have to reboot my PC.

Now when I launch the game it does not launch, it just loads a black screen which crashes and never recovers, have to reboot to get back to windows.

Turns out changing the resolution seems to bugger the game up....amazingly...

I've tried finding the settings.txt and deleting it, the game starts again but I get the same error. If I try setting custom resolutions in the settings.txt file I still crash. I've seen some people suggest taking out the screen.left and screen.top values and scre++++++ate but I get the same problem doing that.

I just tried to play the game for a bit with the default 800x600 which looks horrid but oh well...got about 5 minutes into the game where you use the first console in game which turns on life support and the game crashed again.

Just...terrible, completely terrible. I have a steam ticket open but that will be weeks from what I've heard, and EA support was useless.

Anyone got any ideas? Specs in sig, latest drivers, latest updates etc.

It was these issues that got me quitting Dead Space in the first place. A couple reviewers have let slip that they really like Dead Space 2, so I was gonna try to finish my play through of Dead Space 1. Sounds like I wont be doing that after all.

I know :/

Well I wont be buying dead space 2 when I buy the original and it doesn't work LOL

It worked for me at 2560x1440, and looked pretty good, I thought.

This could be a scaling issue though. Turn off all scaling, then try a more standard resolution, such as 1920x1080, and see what happens. Or maybe try turning scaling on if it's off.

Scaling is on (as it should be) and 2560x1600 is the native resolution for the monitor, I've tried other resolutions like 1280x800 and 1920x1200 and they don't work either.

Bizarre. I'm running it at 1920x1200 right her just fine on Win 7 64. Mine's the retail version but I can't imagine why that would make any difference.

Shot in the dark that I'm sure you've already looked into: Oversensitive to overclocks? Some games can be more than others.

Overheating? Mundane stuff like that. ;) Probably all good.

Have you tried uninstalling/reinstalling the game and/or verifying the files and all that obvious stuff? I did a quick google of the problem and a simple reinstall solved it for some people.

I did a verify of the game cache.

I think it might be down to the sound card, the Xonar D2X, but I disabled that and just used my USB headset which has it's own audio driver, and that didn't help either. Really sucks :/

Do you use dual monitors? I know Fallout New Vegas and FO3 crashed on me when I used dual monitors for the first time.(When it had to do the settings). This probably isn't the issue but if you do use dual monitors you could always try it.

The symptoms sound like you're experiencing a refresh rate issue. Can you alt+enter to tab between window and fullscreen? Crysis does this to me from time to time

Nope, just the one monitor, 2560x1600 via DL-DVI.

It has 2 native resolutions, 2560x1600 and 1280x800 and neither resolution works.

Yeah I'm fairly sure that it's crashing when the resolution changes as the game starts up, and when you're in the menu and change resolution it crashes immaterially after selecting it from the menu.

The refresh rate of my monitor is 60hz and that's set correctly in windows and also set to 60hz in the game settings.txt as well. I was able to alt tab out without a problem, and get back in, while i was running at 800x600

Never had probs with any game on Steam. Dead Space crashes on my Win 7 Pro x64 system after about 5 minutes or so. It mostly happens when a bunch of monsters show up. Yep, tried playing in window. Just updated drivers on my GTX 460, so we'll see if that helps.
Crappy console port is what I've been reading and I've experienced before with other games. I'll just delete the game. I don't have time or energy to troubleshoot lazy programming any more. Shouldn't have to in this day and age, right? :D

For most of us here, the game ran well.

To put this into perspective, take a look at your library of titles, and choose a title that's absolutely stable for you (if you don't have many stable titles then there's probably something wrong with your system).

Okay, now visit the technical support forum for that title.

The difference there is most problems to most games are fixed via patches. Dead Space isn't one of them. People buying this game are very much rolling the dice and hoping they're not hit by inexplicable unplayability.

I will try window mode when I get home today.

Yeah it sucks there has been lack of patches. I don't expect a completely bug free game but I do expect basic ability to play the game, not being able to play or even change the resolution should have not been allowed through bug testing. My machine runs pretty much everything flawlessly, the only really serious issues I tend to get is with my Xonar D2X sound card with some games but I've tried with no audio so it's not that!

That sucks that you're having this problem. I just finished the game for the first time and loved it. I actually thought it was a pretty flawless game -- no hiccups, crashes, or anything. I played through with a GTX460 1024MB (MSI) at 1920x1080, 120hz with vsync on, as well as all the other options. Honestly, one of the most stable games I've played in a while....

Same with me. Never had a problem, save for the in-game vsync and low mouse sensitivity issue. With that, all I did was disable vsync in-game (which fixes mouse sensitivity) and force it through the nvidia control panel. I'm on my second playthrough and everything is fine still.

GTX 570 @ 1920x1200, 60Hz

I'm playing with a dual monitor setup as well (extended desktop) and I've had no problems with that either.

I jumped on the weekend deal as well, and i have the same issue, except worse - my game will not launch at all. It just hangs on a black screen for about 5 seconds then crashes. I googled it and came up with this thread. If the original poster figures anything out please let me know

Same for me ... My only standout is I'm running tri-lcd, which other games have had issues with before, though fixed via patch. But you'd think they would think of that now a days.

Tried with only one screen on .. same issue .. so not sure what it could be now

Shot in the dark:

Are all the people having this crash issues running either SLI or Crossfire setups?
