Dead PSU?

Just looking to double-check on this-

While busy playing a DDO trial, my computer suddenly dies. No warning, no save. It won't come back on, either. This would mean that the PSU failed, right? I don't see what else it could be.

Specs:

P4 HT 3.0Ghz
1 GB RAM
2X PATA HD, 250 and 300 GB
GeForce 7800GTX running 2 monitors
DVD+RW
ASUS P5DG1 (or something like that) motherboard.

No. The motherboard "tells" the PSU when to turn on and off so it could be the motherboard too.

You could jumper the green and black wires on the PSU's main ATX connector to see if it fires up, but you might want to consider a cheapy $10-$20 PSU tester for the ol' toolbox.

When I hit the power button, the lights kick on for a fraction of a second and the fans just barely move. It looks like the PSU is getting a signal from the MB. I suppose I'm gonna have to get diagnostics done to see which one's failed then?

Just test the PSU without the mobo...at least will tell you if its the mobo or the PSU itself. Just jump the green and black wires on your PSU. I use alittle piece of wire...if the PSU comes on with no problems and stays on, then your PSU is ok.

By "jumpering the green and black wires" you eliminate the motherboard. But it seems you might be a candidate for paying somone for "diagnostics."

Still, a simple PSU testing tool is cheaper than any computer shop's bench charge and is pretty accurate for determining "dead PSU vs. dead mobo."

ya i totally agree...if you have like 12-15$ you can always pic up a Multi meter from radio shack...at least you can use that on anything, not just a PSU.
