Hi Everyone,

Saturday I left my computer to go make a sandwich, came back and the thing had shut off completely. The light on the button of the PSU was on and still turns on, but the 2 leds on my mobo that would always be on if the psu was connected and on, do not even light up anymore no matter if everything else is unplugged etc.

Just trying to confirm a situation like this atleast fits the picture of a failed PSU?

Any thoughts would be appreciated!

Thanks!

test your psu by connecting a couple of fans and shorting the green and black wires on the 24pin ATX connector with a paperclip. it should turn on. google "jumping a psu" for more detailed info.

it sounds to me like a dead motherboard though, what with the psu still lighting up.

Hey I posted a similar problem in R.I.P. PSU. I had random computer power-offs for the last couple months, though I never would personally catch it. I would hit the power button and the fans would briefly spin up just to die out again. I could turn off the PSU from the switch on the back, let the computer completely lose power, turn the PSU back on then my computer would restart. This leads me to believe it was a PSU problem. Yesterday I came to my computer with the same random power-off and it would not restart. I'm not sure where my MB lights are but same as you I cannot see any lit up on my MB as well (and I seem to remember that there was 1 or 2 LED's before). MY guess is it to be a PSU problem, though it could very well be a CPU problem, or a MB problem. Since yours seems similar I would guess PSU as well.

I think the main problem is it would be very difficult to determine if it was a MB or PSU problem. You need a replacement one or the other to troubleshoot what it may be. I know personally I have a 350W Antec and I've been running it with an O/C'ed CPU and a X800 O/C'ed as well, which is well beyond the recommended Wattage.
