Dead PC...WTH!!

So, I built this computer for gaming...

P4 3.04GHz 533MHz FSB
2-512MB Corsair RAM PC3200
80GB ATA133 Maxtor HDD
nVidea FX5600 (I think)

It was working great for a couple of months, no problems at all.

Last night, while playing City of Heroes, it just quit, no warning or symtoms of any kind. It just shut off, and will not turn on again...no sign of life at all. Now, my instinct is that this is a power supply problem (at least I hope it is). The PSU is a Powmax that came with my case. I will be getting a new PSU asap.

But, if I'm wrong and the PSU wasn't the problem? Could someone please post some tips on where to look next?

Also, I'm looking at new PSU's on newegg, and I have a rather n00bish question. Many of the PSU's I'm looking at have fans on top, but my case doesn't have a vent above the PSU area. Can I install one of the PSU's safely?

It could only really be your PS or Motherboard.

Most likely only the PS, if it is, hope it didn't take anything else out.

You fail to mention if there is even a lighted LED on the motherboard that would signify enough current running through the system or just the capacitors discharging. Any way you look at it, it would be the power supply. If not, then enjoy trying to RMA that bad boy.

There is no light on the motherboard at all...now. There was a light just after it failed. It was late at night and I had to work the next day, so I didn't have a chance to troubleshoot it that night. I unplugged the system, and plugged it in again the next morning (in sheer desperation ) and the light was off.

Is there power coming from that outlet at all? Maybe you popped the breaker or maybe someone thought it would be funny to turn a few off at the box.

A you running your box through a UPS or Surge Protecter? (if not, WTF!) Make sure to check the breakers on those too.

I'm happy to say that I'm typing this post on my new PC, now fixed! PSU was the trouble. Got a new Antec 350 watt PSU and its working fine.
