well, to start the story off, my computer has been making funny clicking noises for the past few days, but i decided to pay it no heed, as it was one of the same noises that i would hear when the machine would boot up. but the, as these noises would start, the computer would halt for a few seconds. if i were in a game, the game would freeze for about 10 secs, then all would return to normal, or, if i were listingin to music, the music would freeze for about 10 secs, then all would return to normal.

then, on thursday the 18th, i woke up to my computer being on, but no image on the screen [fans were running, power lights were on, etc....but no image] so, i turn the machine off, let it rest for a min or 2, then punch the power button again. fans spun up, keyboard lights lit up, and the main power led lit up as well, but no image. so, i decided that perhaps the PSU was going and wasnt providing enough power to get the system moving. so i replaced it with a spare, and much to my dismay, got the same results. so, i decided to unplug my spare HDD [the deskstar]. again, same results. so, i also uWDnplugged the WD HDD. but this time, the post appeared and told me no HDDs were detected [duh!] so, i plugged the WD back in [keeping the deskstar unplugged] and decided to give it another whirl. much to my dismay, the fans spun up, and little leds blinked with joy, but there was no post to be displayed.

so, is my WD drive dead? btw, the WD drive holds my windows partition....

edit: when i have both drives plugged in, the bios reports no drives detected. when i have the IBM deskstar plugged in [by itself] it detects it no problems. when the WD is plugged in [by itself] it doesnt detect it. there are no problems with the IDE cable, and hopefully no problems with the IDE channel.

the sound you heard was the drive recalibrating
(fine tuning its head positioning)

the facts as outlined arent good
no recovery is possible until you can get it reditected
you have backup? do you need to recover data at all?

down load the WD LifeGuard Diagnostic
change out the cable, set the drive as master
and try to get it detected
then run the diagnostic

the drive was primary master, and it wasnt detected by the bios on the primary IDE controller or the raid controller. ive tried different IDE cables and even a different PSU [thinking the drives werent getting enough power].
