Ok so here is my issue, I have a 300GB Maxtor drive in which i have my entire music library on and just the other day it decided it wanted to take a shit on me. Every time i try to access it, it gives me an error that says something to the effect of "Drive not formatted, do you wish to format now?" And I know for damn sure there is plenty of stuff on there, such as ~35,000 songs which would take me months of just sitting at my computer and ripping on to my drive. This is not the route which i would prefer although if need be it can be done that way. I was just wondering if any of you know of any programs that I can run inside (or outside) of windows that can read and copy all the data off of my drive. I believe that it is a corrupted file somewhere in the FAT table but I could be wrong, I would just like to know of a way to fix it. If anyone has any ideas it would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know exactly how to do this, but Knoppix live cds have some sort of data recovery utilities that can be used on NTFS formatted discs. As long as the drive still spins up I would think that this may be something that could work for you.
 
I had something similar happen where I started getting the same prompt and it turned out I had lost my latest incarnation of my resume... I thought.

I decided to try to recover it so I bought a bytecc bt200 USB to IDE adapter from the egg for $17.00.

Set the drive jumper to master and plugged in the drives connectors, powered it up and plugged it into my machine. Windows recognizes it as a local drive right off the bat.

Then I download a program (freeware) from the net called PC Inspector File Recovery. The software is okay and after telling it to find logical drives on the bunged up drive I was able to eventually see everything that was previously on the drive and recover my resume.

I'd give something like this a try.

one of the best software i used.. to retrive photo's off a harddrive i ALREADY formatted:

R-STUDIO Network Edition 3.0

very good program... can recover deleted items.. can even attempt to recover all your mp3s even ifthe drive is slowly dieing would recommend it.. but it does costs some $$$ though :(
 
This happened to me last week with my maxtor/seagates. I used partition table doctor and it recovered everything.

makes sure you have 48-bit lba updates too.
 
I apologize ahead of time if this is considered a thread-jack, but I'm hoping someone can give me a hand.

I am trying to get several very important files off of a clients home computer for them. On of the registry hives was somehow corrupted, giving the error:

Stop: c0000218 {Registry File Failure} The registry cannot load the hive (file): \SystemRoot\System32\Config\SOFTWARE or its log or alternate

After investigating, and applying the information found HERE, the hard drive will not boot up and causes the system to perpetually reboot.

Question? Even with a borked registry, if i change the jumpers on the drive to slave (it is an IDE Maxtor) and plug it into one of my main systems, should I be able to access the files on that disk??

Please advise on any possible options you all might have! Thanks.

PS. I'm also posting in the Windows forum as well.
 
Yep, that is definately a thread jack ;)

However, after doing a little research, I do believe the Knoppix live cd I referenced above can do what you need. I have never actually done this, so I can't help guide you through the process, but you certianly should be able to find this information on your own. I would take a look and see what you can find.
 
ok so ya, that was most definitely a thread jack, but it's cool. Alright so here is some new info, i'm hoping it will help. So I took my computer over to a friends house who has a copy of Winternals ERD Commander and it couldn't do anything with the drive, unless there is something else that can be done with it. I then downloaded a Knoppix Live CD and attempted to use the recovery programs that come with it, and one analyzes a drive for you and I believe the drive had something crazy like 2% bad clusters. So, my new question is does anyone know of any programs or anything that I can do to get my files back? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Download the manufacturer's diagnostic utilities and run them. It'll be a bootable disk or iso though.

As far as recovering the files goes, PC Inspector File Recovery is what I have used several times. It's free (or it used to be) and does a pretty good job of finding files.
 
ok, so my maxtor diagnostic said my drive needs to be replaced and i should back everything up if i haven't already. Well thats just dandy, because i can't even access anything, and also I tried PC Inspector File Recovery and it gives me an error that reads "error no.23, drv:131 lba:28814435 blocks: 1020, Abort, Retry or Ignore?"
