Hi all,
I've been browsing these forums for about half a year now but I've only just run into a problem that has me sufficiently stumped to ask you guys about. It seems that my one month old Geforce 6800GT has just died on me for no apparent reason. I went to a friends place just down the road for a couple of hours, leaving my comp running Windows desktop, and when I came back my monitor didn't seem to be responding. The comp was still on so I plugged it into another monitor and that wasn't responding as well.

I turned the computer off and checked all the interior connections to make sure the card was still seated properly, and when I booted it up again straight away it gave a single one second beep and a minute later I heard it load into Windows. Figuring that none of the other components seemed to be broken I installed my old MX440 and everything worked perfectly. After cleaning the AGP slot to make sure I gave the GT one final try with the same results, which seems to prove that its the card thats the problem.

My specs are:
Athlon64 3000+ (939)
MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum
1GB Corsair XMS-3200XL
Geforce 6800GT
Thermaltake Purepower 480W PSU

I know my power supply is just barely adequate but my comps been running fine for just over a month now, nothings voltage overclocked, and it has adequately survived Prime95. I personally don't think that it is very likely that the GT was damaged by a power surge, as I was just down the road and didn't notice anything, and I had two other computers running in my house at the same time, however I will be looking into getting something more adequate than what I already have. I also don't think that the card could have died due to overheating as it wasn't overclocked, the onboard fan is still running, I have perfectly adequate case cooling and those cards have 120 degree C thresholds anyway.

So do you guys have any theories about why it might have died or advice on any tests I should perform next or whether I should RMA it? I won't be here to answer questions for about 12 hours but I've tried to give all the info I can. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Your PSU is more than enough. As long as you dont fill your case with lights and HDDs and fans, then its not a problem that PSU is powerful enough. It sounds like the cards buggered, so you should RMA it.
