I have a dead hard drive that Id like to recover some data from it. Its a western digital Caviar SE16 WD5000AAKS, 500 GB 3.5 SATA drive.
It keeps spinning up, spinning up, spinning up. The bios recognizes it, but it will not finish the post sequence. I dont think there is a clicking noise. If there is, its very very quiet.
Ive tried it in the main computer case, and I also put it in a usb docking station connected to my laptop, but its the same thing. Spin up, spin up, spin up.
In the docking station, the driver installs but it has an error saying something like its not connected. The drive letter never shows up.
My question, is there any way I can get this up and running long enough to recover some data? Ive heard of replacing PCBs or putting it in the freezer.
However, the pcb replacement probably wont work, because it is still seen by the BIOS, so I'm thinking the PCB is still good. The freezer trick, google says is mainly for drives that wont spin up. This drive constantly spins up, spins up, spins up, etc.
I'll be doing the freezer trick as last resort, but I was wondering if anyone had any more specific or more accurate steps I could take. Any advice?
