Well if any of you remember the "dead dream machine" post about a week and a half ago you all know that my RMA items are coming back soon. Well today is judgement day, and time pick me ego off the ground. All my RMA items are back, brand spakin new and hopefully it works this time around. I determined that my problem last time was , 1 extra standoff that fried my board. Anyway my reason for posting is the following:

Why attempt to turn the computer on outside the case if it still has to go back into the case? I hear the reason is grounding issues (meaning too many standoffs???) I've never actually seen this procedure in practice just reading on this forum.

Thanks guys, wish me luck

First time I build a system I always boot it up outside of the case just to be sure it all works. I sit the board on the anti-static bag, with the foamy stuff in between the board and bag. Then I put the board on the end of the mobo box, so I can put my PCI card in it.

I figure it saves me the time of putting it together and then realising something doesn't work, and having to take it all appart again...

Anyway, good luck with it this time around man.

Isn't the point of the ESD bag eliminated if you put the object on top of it as opposed to in it? I thought the way they were constructed that they'd be worthless in that situation.

Wow weirdest thing I thought that I had an extra standoff problem but looking at my new motherboard and manual there are actually 10 holes but my motherboard only says to use 9.

Can anyone tell me why?

Basically the extra whole(s) in your mother board are for different fitting cases. It is possible to get a case that doesn't have the same whole setup as another.

I'm not sure if that happens anymore, since ATX has been around so long, I'm sure all companies have figured out a standard for screw wholes. But originaly they were put there because the motherboard mount didn't necessarily have the same screw positioning.

As for why the extra standoff will fry your componants, I don't know... It is actually quite odd.

just wanted to thank all of you for the tips and information. I built the machine yesterday and i'm on it now.

thanks again guys

there is no real point in sitting the board on top of the bag b/c it doesn't do any good. there was a big huge arguement about this same thing a week ago, so i'm not trying to start that again, but it's not really necessary(the bag)
