I recently helped a friend build a new computer, It booted fine and everything was running properly, until today my friend thought the 4 pin connector was lose so he tried to push it in all the way the computer was on at the time don't ask me why he left it on. He told me that when he did that there were some sparks that came out from around the cpu and he said there was a burning smell. Now it will turn on but will not load the windows of even post he thinks the processor is dead which I agree with but I'm thinking the mobo might have gone with it.

can anyone offer some advice?

cpu is probably fine, but mobo is definitely fried. Try that cpu in another mobo to confirm ;) :D

Thank you for your help Teh.

I'll let him know so he doesn't go off and order another cpu.

Yeah, I bet it was a VRM or a MOSFET... not the CPU.

I've been wrong before though...

Yep, no post is usually more indicative of a bad board. I just picked up a gigabyte p45-ds3r over the weekend because i thought i killed my rampage, decent little board for the price.
