I went out of town, and as many of you know most my boxen are in the basement.

I figured that this was a good place to keep them, cool air sinks ya know ;)

Soon after I left the fuse tripped for the compressor for my AC :eek:

I came home last night and my house was ~85 inside. Most my boxen seem fine.... besides my headless/naked E4500. when I flip the power on (on the back of the PSU) power ready lights come on the mobo. I trip the power on leads and all the happens is a small whine from the PSU :confused:

I've never had this before. It's a earthwatts 430, and since the power ready lights com on I'm thinking the CPU or mobo fried. I'll try some stuff when I get home tonight, but I wanted to see if anyone knew exactly what was going on, hopefully not from experience.

 
If the boxen overheated, it would have shut off. I am guessing power surge. Best option is to switch power supplies and see what happens.
 
I've had the NB fry on one of my Abit IP35-E's when it hit 93F in my folding room. If you have a spare mobo try it. Most PSU's have a thermal overload protection, I've never had an earthwatts die on me yet.



 
I would any PSU that whines DEAD.
At a guess, one of the caps has been cooked, hence the noise.
How much other stuff it took out when it died is another story.

Try disconnecting the PSU, jumper the green to black and see if it will spin some case fans up when switched on.
But I wouldn't trust a noisy PSU to power a box 24/7.

Gotta say I agree with Tiger.....if the PSU is making noise, it's probably dead.

And honestly, just because you've had really good luck with Earthwatts doesn't necessarily mean that one can't crap out on you. I would try a different PSU and see what happens....

Every PSU that has died on me has done the same thing. It sends power to the mobo, but as soon as it's under load it shuts down.



 
Well hooked up another PSU and waht do ya know! It works :rolleyes:

I have only had the PSU for 3 months :mad: I guess I should be glad it didn't take out the mobo/cpu.

Also, not sure how it could be a power surge whent here are 3 other boxen hooked up the the same surge protector.

You probably just ended up with a bum PSU or one with a bum part or two in it. Just one of those things that happens. Here's a couple things to keep in mind. Us folders generally put more stress on computer components than just about anyone else which means we're going to find problems with hardware more often. Second, we also have gotten to like the efficient Earthwatts PSUs and use a lot of them. Because of that, we're going to statistically run into problems with hardware more often than your average joe.

Only 85F? Hell, it's usually around 82F around my computers with the a/c on and I usually keep it there. I got back a little while ago from the apartment complex office to bitch. I noticed it was rather cold in my apartment when I stepped in the door. I looked at the thermometer on my desk and it was showing 76F and made a beeline for the thermostat. It was set at 70F. Someone was in my apartment today and changed the temperature on the thermostat and I'm extremely pissed off about it. My a/c was probably running all damn day, I have to pay for it and I wasn't even here.

Before anyone asks, I did not set it to that. I never turn my thermostat down that low when the a/c is on. When the heat is on, yes, but never when the a/c is on. I even remember turning it up this morning before I left for work like I do every day before I leave for work.

 
Sorry to hear your PS died. I'm glad it didn't nuke the rest of your system. Seems like summer is rough time for folding. Our power is starting to go out a lot (just for a few minutes at a time). It took out all 6 of my SMP clients today. At least I only lost one WU and not all six.

Good luck with warranty service. I haven't had much success with manufacturers sending back working components.
