so i bought this 9800 pro (128Mb)from a user a couple months ago, and everything was fine until the other day....i went to sleep, and when i woke up..my monitor was black..figured screen saver turned off and so i pushed a key, to refresh the screen..and nothing....so i manually turned off the comp and restarted...and nothing on the screen again...nothing loads...BUT, when i plug my minotor cord into my integrated slot, everything is perfect.
I just recently upgraded this card with an Arctic Silencer Ver. 3, and its been on about a week or two, with 0 problems...ive also been Oc'ing with AtiTool, (just the core, not memory). Just wondering about what could be the problem?

Running P4 2.6 @ 3.0
1 Gb Corsair Mem

also, whenever i start windows, my "add new hardware" screen pops up, but it doesnt load. Also tried to go to ati.com and dl Catalyst 6.3, but that wont load either...error message saying i "Setup was unable to find components that can be instlaled on your current hardware or software configuration"

Again, any help would be great

You know, I have been seeing a few dead 9800 Pro's lately, and most of them have an AC Silencer on them. I had a 9800 Pro with one on it and it died after a few months at stock speeds. My brother tried it in another computer and it wouldn't even posts. The new one I have is a 9800XT but it has a 9800 Pro bios. I put a zalman VF-700Cu on it and haven't had any trouble with it yet.

My guess is that your card is toast and it's time to look for a new card. My theory is that the AC Silencer isn't making good contact with the core and it is overheating regularly, or there isn't enough airflow around hot capacitors and posts with copper windings causing heat damage somehow. I used a thermal probe on mine and the little posts with copper wire wrapped around it peaked above 100C! My thermal probe didn't measure that high!

You can look at Newegg for a 6600GT or a 6800GS if you plan on keeping your computer for awhile i.e. longer than 8 months.

thanks for the reply...going to try to see if it still has a warrantly..long shot, but im willing to try
