Booted up my PC this morning with red and pink vertical lines. Its looking like a VRM issue from what I am reading from people that had the same problem. I tried my cards individually. One runs and boots up just fine. I run the other and I get the vertical lines that take up the entire screen and will not boot to windows. I have read the thread about "baking" your video card, but I dont know if mine would be a good candidate.
When I run it in crossfire with my monitors all plugged into the working card, I get the same vertical lines before even booting to windows.
I run 2x 7970 in Crossfire. Rig is in sig. My card is 2 1/2 years old and I did not register within 30 days of this card which is a lesson learned. Anyway, I have some options..Keep in mind the specs in my sig. My 2500k is bottlenecking me some due to only running 4 theads. I was planning on upgrading this around Christmas.

Option #1 - Buy a 280x which can be crossfired with my 7970 that still works.

Option #2- Buy a used 7970 to hold me over until next gen.

Option #3 - Sell my 7970 I have and buy 290's and Crossfire them.

So [H], in your opinion, where should I go from here?
 
Option #1 and Option #2 will end up being the same for you as the 280x will downclock itself to run at the same speeds as the 7970. Option #3 isn't a bad idea if you have the budget, you could also upgrade to a single 4k monitor or eyefinity 1440/1600 monitors down the line, obviously it will be quite a bit more expensive.

I might try the baking the card as a last resort...anyone tried this? what were your results?
 
option 1 imo just has disaster written all over it to me, option 3 sounds more like a solid plan if you have the budget.
 
If you end up going with option 3 make sure you grab custom cooled 290s to avoid any temp/throttling issues of the stock cooler.
 
Just watch you'd be getting close on wattage limits with the 290's on you PSU should still be doable though
 
What about just going one 290x and selling the 7970 you have, of course try the baking method on the dead 7970 first? Of course you could always go with a 7990 from ebay for around $400 and trifire your cards :)

Would a 290x would be a step down from 2x 7970s though, right?
 
I think a 290x is around 1.5x a 7970 ghz so it will unless crossfire scaling is not working correctly then I could be faster.
 
Would keep the 7970 sit on it til next gen comes out, pick up the 380x in a month or two. The speculations of the 380x is that price will be $300-350 and be 10-15% faster than the 290x just a thought
