Dead 120GB DiamondMax?

I have a 250GB WD2500JB as my primary master, and a 120GB DiamondMax+9 Maxtor as my primary slave. It pulls multimedia duties. My PC has been bugging me for days to run CHKDSK on my 250, and I didn't. A myriad of errors and a no-boot later, here I am. After Media Player Classic wouldn't work, I restarted. Machine POSTed, but didn't boot. Wasn't detecting either of my IDE hard drives. I switched them to the secondary channel to the same results. The opticals were detected on both the primary and secondary channels. I took the 250 out and put it in my file server as a slave, and ran CHKDSK on it. Took an hour and a half. Then I put it back in my rig as the master, and still no boot. I unplugged the Maxtor, and voila; the whole thing works. I have no jumpers on the Maxtor, as that is supposed to mean slave. That has worked since December of '04. Should I find a jumper and make it cable select or something? Would that have any effect? Is there another way to get my machine to boot with the Maxtor in there? I really need to back it up if it's going to die. If its dead, how much is data recovery going to cost me? Stuff's that important.
 
I would try each drive on its own channel with no optical drives, and the absolute lowest possible load on the system's PSU. Try and get it going as such. Some of the tools on The UltimateBootCD, found here may be of help. Failing that, Seagate DRS will give you a no obligation quote on recovering data from the drive, but it will be expensive, in the neighborhood of $1K-2K. Others have used OnTrack with good results. IIRC one of the members who has used them says that OnTrack will pop you $100 for analysis and another $1800 for recovery. I'd ask Seagate first, the price is right. :)

Take this experience as a lesson in the value of backups. It's too easy to have task scheduler run a backup once a week at a time when you're not using the box anyway.
 
Changed some BIOS settings, ran Ultimate Boot Disc, it is detecting the drive. Max Blast is detecting it. Made a 120GB partition on my 250, about to transfer the data, buy another 250, and put that partition on there. Thanks.
