I know that DDWRT "unlocks" all of the features of the device that it's installed on, but do different devices have different options in DDWRT? Could DDWRT on one router have different options than DDWRT on a different router?

Thanks.. just wondering. I installed DDWRT on a router that I bought which supported it, but didn't know how it differed from DDWRT running on other routers.
 
DD-WRT doesn't "unlock" features of a router, it takes advantages of most consumer routers having more powerful hardware than the factory firmware that comes with most brands provide. In other words, it's a entirely different firmware (think OS) with some built-in features that could be equal to your existing firmware, or often times giving you much more features than you would have had otherwise.

The only differences you'll find between DD-WRT devices is usually the hardware (CPU, Flash, NVRAM, Wireless, etc.). Other than that you may find some slightly different features depending on which version and how old the build version is between two DD-WRT firmwares. They don't often add new features or anything noticeable. Usually what you see is what you get and at this point the project is so massive and disorganized with variations of hardware that they are just focusing on stablizing and ironing out the bugs.

yeah but can I run an UT3 server on a DD-WRT router? I saw that I could run a server on a ClearOS dedicated gateway machine but not on my consumer Netgear POS wndr3700v2. Would dd-wrt make a difference?

Yeah that's what I'm thinking now myself. The project was originally designed for Linksys WRT54G routers and since then has become so disorganized and the hardware variations have made it almost impossible to keep up with. Probably one of the reasons why okashira is having issues with his Surface Pro in another thread.

It was great at the time I used it because it was one of those original models that DD-WRT was designed for, but after finally getting me a big boy firewall/router (ZyXel) there is no looking back. I do miss some of those consumer features, especially the traffic monitoring though. What I would say is never look at buying a new router just based off whether it's supported by DD-WRT unless you plan to follow that community religiously.

Reason I ask is because I recently go a Netgear R7000 and it's been a huge PITA (dropping wifi and such) and I was considering trying DD-WRT. I, however, have never used it before so I'm a little unsure if I should
 
You prob could run a UT3 server if it has a usb port and can compile it for ARM (or whatever the processor is in it)

I run dd-wrt on my Netgear R7000. Only reason I did it was to completely disable WDS. I tried and failed to find contact info for Kong ( my firmware of choice @ http://www.desipro.de/ddwrt/K3-AC-Arm/ ) I would like to get mdns-repeater added into it so I can try to connect apple tv over openvpn

Look deeper at why the wifi is dropping.

Is it all of your machines/devices?
Where is the router at?
What about your neighbors wifi?
Have you updated the firmware?

My brother a few weeks back was telling me what a POS his netgear was. Turns out that the "internet dropping" was due to a bad signal which was diagnosed by poor signal at the modem.

yeah that seems to be a shitty adsl thing, the modem/router hangs when the ISP goes down for a fraction of a second. I had that alot back when I had DSL and had a hard time convincing ppl to trust the router instead of the ISP
 
So I hear all the trepidation on the fragmentation of dd-rt (much like Android in some regards), but I'm curious if there is an alternative to using dd-wrt? (I still use dd-wrt and am very happy with it on a Asus RT-N16.)

I guess, honestly, what features are you after that a canned consumer router cannot provide? You can pop PFsense or untangle onto a low power box and be pretty happy. I am and have been using untangle since V5. No complaints. PFsense is another one to check out. These both IMO are complete and work great.

My experience with DD-WRT has been:
Devices randomly reset to stock after power cycle
Devices just lock up, require a reflash
Port forwards sometimes work
They don't like heavy traffic
 
OpenWRT works much better than DD-WRT in general, DD-WRT supports more devices as they allow binary blobs which has downsides as those mentioned above. Go for a supported Atheros platform/router and you'll have a nice experience if you don't wont to go the ERL-route and possibly switch the OS to FreeBSD.

Not to nitpick, but isn't that what "unlocking" is? ;)

But yea.. I knew that. I just didn't know the "more features" you're talking about is different depending on which router you put it on (ex: Linksys WRT54G vs Dlink DIR-615).

It's hard to know about the different types of hardware and features, since I can't exactly buy many different types of routers economically, you know?

Networking wise Wireless Distribution System. Windows Server wise, Windows Deployment Services (I think). In this case it's the first and it's a horrible feature that is full of flaws that should be disabled.

So, is a WDS just a system for bridging wireless routers/AP's together, or is it more than that? From reading wikipedia, that's all I can decipher. For wireless bridging/repeating...

Windows Deployment services, I have no idea about really. I think that's how updates are installed on an array of servers... but I could be wrong :p
 
I used a DD-WRT'd Asus router two years ago. It was my roomates. We had to reset the thing all the time because it would just lock-up/crash. About every other day i'd have to unplug it, count to 30, and then plug it back in.

Right now I'm using a version 2 WRT54G (I think it's a 2003 model) with 2006 official firmware. Works great. The only feature I wish I had, that I don't, is the ability to throttle LAN traffic. It does let you throttle wireless traffic, however.

and the range on the wireless is really dang good. The router is on the second floor, in a spare bedroom. Sitting in the kitchen, on the first floor, opposite side of the housel we get 4 bars on our laptops with the built in cards. That's like 50 feet, through 3 walls, a floor, and destination is the kitchen where interference culprits like the fridge are reasonably in the way.

That Asus I talked about before, had awful range.

I love DD-WRT! In my home, I run two Linksys routers(WRT600N, and E-3000) as AP's, and a pfsense box as my router. When I originally got my WRT600N, the wireless connection would constantly drop out, and the web interface was supremely slow, I grabbed the latest firmware from Linksys and updated; the update disabled the wireless altogether. I put DD-WRT on it and the router has been rock solid since. Some may knock DD-WRT, or had issues with it in the past; but for me; its been nothing but reliable.
