DDR2 vs DDR3

In real world performance is there that much of a difference between DDR2 and DDR3?
I'm looking at a couple of AM2+/AM3 mainboards that will take DDR2. Would they be that much slower than an AM3 mainboard that takes DDR3?
Getting ready to upgrade and want to keep my 4 GB DDR2 1066 memory and save a couple hundred bucks.
Your thoughts?

You probably won't notice much difference between DDR2-1066 and DDR3-1066 (and depending on the timings, the ddr2 may be a bit faster). But for the sake of upgrade ability, I'd go with a AM3 DDR3 motherboard.
