Yeah, a little bird told me that DDR3 will be using the same 240-pin socket as DDR2 does. Huzzah for upgrading! :D

so chipset support has nothing to do with it ? I mean, it sounds kinda silly to be able to just use ddr3 with any chipset or processor doesn't it? Perhaps this means that future chipsets/processors will support both so we are cool till we can afford ddr3 memory.

Ok . So if DDR2 and DDR3 are pin compatitable I see some real issue's If the notch is in the same place.

Intels 965 Conroe cheapset Is DDR2 only .

So In 07 they come out with new memory controller on chipset that will run DDR3

if DDR3 fits a DDR2 socket how many morons will stick DDR3 into a DDr2 compatable only Chipset. Jedec I don't believe will have the notch in the same place. It will just cause to much of a problem.

I am sure most of us can see this as a very real possiablity. Jedec is suppose to make sure such compatability issue's do not occur.

Ya another thing pisses me off is that DDR3 And XDR should arrive at same time.

AMD has once again slid one by Intel . The AMD AM2 I believe not sure will support DDR2 DDR3 and XDR as Rambus is working with AMD . So whats this mean?

My logic is this. IMC on AM2 may be compatitable but will the socket be for the memory. So even tho you can use the same processor if the socket notch is differant you will still be required to replace M/B Since AMD M/B are cheaper than Intels . AMD scores on Intel once again. If the sockets are the same exactly AMD scores hugh On intel as no upgrade will be required.

For intel if socket notch is located in a differant place. It will requirer a new M/B which is more costly for Intel users AMD scores.

If the notch is in same place Intel will have compatability issues with its customers and the public because not all DDR2 chipset support DDR3 AMD scores big on Intel . and Intels repetation is further damaged in the publics eye's.

If AMD also supports XDR which I believe is better than DDR3 and AMD releases a memory socket for XDR on another M/B AMD puts the hurts to Intel big time .

Intel ans with XDR chipset and yet another new M/B upgrade . AMD has Intel covered here on all fronts Intel loses in this battle.

It would be rather nice to have DDR2 and DDR3 be so compatible that one could just drop it in to get a bit of a speed boost, even on a older board.

I'm getting dizzy by the whole issue... But yeah, I think XDR will kick DDR3 behing although it sort of depends upon the memory chip manufacturers like samsung or hynix which memory will ultimately rule the market. It can become just another rd-ram/ddr-ram story.

If you were pointing out the spelling You can see I got it right I just not that good with keyboard and I slip and fall a lot as my mind is way ahead of my fingers. Compatiable compatitable compatible compatatbility LOL

yeah, it'll surely be an interesting fight to watch. I think that the smartest move would be to wait until the technologies are close to availability and then assess their benefits and drawbacks when there is retail availability and reviews.

So who do we blame for this issue not Intel as they tried Rambus and the memory cartel conspired against rambus which has been proven in court. No matter what people think of Rambus they do understand memory. No one can blame intel for being rambus gun shy as they already got bloody because of the cartel. All Cartels should be made illeagal as sooner or latter they try to fix prices.

Normally I would agree but in this instance not really DDR3 is rumored to be available in 4th. Qt. 06 XDR is almost ready also . Fact is maybe already used for some applications.

If you buy or are building a state of the art system and in 6 months your memory is outdated and new M/B is required that is BS. Intel should be just as capable as AMD ATI and Sis as having DDR3 compatible chipset. Poncho pointed out to me yesterday in another thread with Intels R&D is second to none and Intel would not resort to using someone else's IMC who has less resource's than Intel . So Intel is either playing the public as suckers or they are wasting money on over paid researchers that really don't have a clue. As for the IMC on the R520 many would agree with me it is the best of the best period.

Here's the E-mail I got yesterday . I am pissed because I really don't no. I got customers waiting on Conroe gamers . If in 5 months a new better memory is available it hurts me and my customers . I don't go for this bullshit . If the slots are 100% compatiable Its OK and a new M/B is not require I can live with that AS the ATI RS600 with SB 600 is suppose to be DDR3 ready I can live with that. But if a new M/B is required I am really angry and very red faced. Here's that E-Mail

Hi David,

an exec from a certain 3bn $ memory company told me the DDR-III will work on same DDR-II motheroboards.

I took his word for it, and I am forwarding your e-mail to him. Just as around 30 other e-mails.

Sorry for believing a memory exec.

Even though both have the same pin count they will not enterchange. the noych is located in a differant spot . You really should read up on things before you Post. You cause way to much fod and its just bad reporting

My advice to you guys buying Conroe find out for sure if DDR3 is socket compatible with DDR2 If it is I hope . Buy ATI chipset not Intel Not NV . I read that SIS is also DDR3 ready chipset. It would seems that the boys playing ball with Rambus are ready those that aren't are not ready.

On the DDR2 DDr3 compatibility issue . the link is here somewhere in the forms . some one posted the amd intel lawsuite and one of the issue's that amd had with intel was the DDR2 DDR3 compatibility issue and how Intel was forcing Jedec's to make them none compatiable. Intel seems to be drunk with power and I have had just about had enough.
