OK need some info. Long time builder but not recently with DDR2 RAM.

Looking at the Gigabyte DS3 MB, but not sure if 667 vs 800 makes any real difference
at stock speeds, I don't OC, but want the best performance I can get and looking to save $$$. Useage will be gaming and multimedia stuff, I have not yet decided on other parts yet. Want 2 gigs.

What do you suggest, educate me please.

Thanks much.

667 if your not going to O/C.. I made the mistake of buying one stick of 667 and now know that my E6600 can go WAY past 333x9 but my memory is not going to go much higher than it's rated speed.. I'll sell you my current stick of RAM (1GB Kingston) if you wish it's barely used going to be purchasing some 800 speed soon and will have no use for it.

Depends *how much* you want to overclock and what processor you get.

E6300 - 800 is a must for overclocking (x7 multi)
E6400 - 667 is really pushing it, but you will still get a decent O/C (x8 multi)
E6600 - 667 is fine (x9 multi)
E6700 - 667 is fine (x10 multi)
E6800 - 533 is fine (unlocked multi)

Also depends what RAM you get. My 667Mhz RAM is running 875Mhz at 2.0V with low timings :D

I own a Pentium D 820, 945 Mobo, 2 GB Corsair Valueselect @ 667

Every year intel offers accomidations to its retailers

So this year they are offering a 6300 Processor, 965 Motherboard, and Windows Vista Ult for $230

I may sell or give the old system away but I am tempted to keep the ram. Is DDR 800 worth it, I do want to overclock this new system.

(Will Corsair Valueselect OC well?)

Where can I get that? :D Or is that only avaialble if you work for one of their retailers? And with a 6300 you want 800 RAM. (Your RAM will be already running at 900Mhz by the time you hit 3.15Ghz)

My Corsair VS DDR2-667 will overclock to 750 MHz but it's not stable. Even giving it more voltage doesn't help. I've settled on 730 MHz with 4-4-4-12 timings. I'd avoid this stuff unless all you want to do is light to moderate overclocking.

I bought the Patriot DDR2 667 from newegg back when it was $179. I don't know what it is now, but I have it running at 800 at low timings (4-4-4-12) and it has passed every test I've thrown at it. I have the Gigabyte DS3 motherobard and I'm limited to 400FSB on my particular board. (I've tried two seperate e6300's and get the same results with both).

My a-data 533 memory hits 800 with ease, at low timings aswell. I've had it up over 900mhz before, and it's kinda an old stick.

Just one note to the guy getting the retail edge bundle...that intel board will OC like crap. Don't bother with any RAM higher than 533 for it.

Does the Crucial need p5b-e rev 1.02g in order to post (2.2v specified)? Or will it work on 1.01g too?
GSkill says 1.8 - 2.0v.
As much as I discourage reading Newegg reviews:

Boots at 1.8V at higher CAS, so no problem with mobos that don't support 2.2V on first boot!

Maybe that's something to think about.
