DDR2: 4GB Help

I am building a new rig, and I have most of the components planned but an having trouble when it comes to picking some memory. I am going with a P35 motherboard and Q6600. I want 4GB as I am going to be keeping the machine for 2 years, and don't want to be finding DDR2 memory once DDR3 stuff is mainstream, as DDR2 prices will increase. Additionally running VM's use a ton on memory, and 2GB's wouldn't cut it. Anyways, I am either going to get 4x1GB or 2x2GB kits. I am looking to spend under $200 (AR), and want the best overclocking memory for the price. It looks like the current 2x2GB kits don't OC well, so I am leaning to purchasing 2x 2x1GB kits. Please give some suggestions!

For 2gb (2x1gb) kits, the Ballistix or the Mushkin Black (even better) are hard to beat. Get some nice DDR2-800 or DDR2-1066 of either one and double up. Ballistix are realitvely cheap right now from mwave.com

2x2GB i'd suggest the g.skill F2-6400CL5D-4GBPQ or the Patriot. Both kits are DDR2-800.

You'll have a hard time finding 4GB for under $200 that overclocks well on top of that.

i was just thinking the same thing :(
right now, it's seriously impossible. you can go 4x1gb and hope your motherboard is ok with it... but then you're limited to like 3 or 4 different kits that MIGHT overclock well

but then again, memory speed means shit for real world app performance :p
 
As a matter of fact, i only know of one kit of 2x2gb that overclocks halfway decent and that is the Mushkin Black CAS4....but that's double as expensive as your budget.
 
the hp2-6400 was damn good for me, making it to 600mhz with a bit too much voltage. to even be able to do that, i was surprised. but again, costly. $300 for 4gb, $100 overbudget. decent 2x2gb for $200 is not happening anytime soon. seriously :p

or you can just say f it, get a value kit of 2x2gb and use a lower memory ratio when oc'ing
 
what do you mean with "how would it be"?

It will be about $270 and yellow unless you opt for the tracers, then it'd be around $290 and blackish.

don't forget the tracers glow! :D

how would they DO? well, depends on your luck. it's overclocking after all, we can't give definite answers there. especially with something as tricky as 4 memory sticks. you might fly, you might end up with a mobo that hates you.

either way it goes, 4 sticks of ballistix would be SUPER hot. literally ;)
