This may sound like a very noob question, well thats probably because it is. I was wondering if you put DDR500 (PC-4000) memory in with a mobo thats "DDR standard" is DDR400 (PC-3200) will there be any problems? Or will the mobo recognize the faster memory?

It'll run at DDR400, at whatever the manufacturer programmed as DDR400 timings. No motherboard will autodetect DDR500, since it's not an officially supported speed. In fact, I don't believe JEDEC ever ratified it as a standard. You'll have to overclock your CPU and motherboard to get to DDR500 (either your FSB or HTT, depending on P4 or Athlon64 respectively).

hmmm so it would be possible to used as DDR500 if the processor/mobo were to be overclocked? Or would it just be a waste of money until it is supported?

I was thinking of using it with a AMD 3500+

It's only worthwhile if you'll be overclocking. A 3500+ should overclock decently, provided it's not a bad batch/stepping.

Alright that makes sense. If I did get the DDR500 and overclocked my 3500+ would I get everything out of the ram? Or would it be a better bang for the buck to just go with DDR400? Sorry for all the questions, I don't know much about memory and this is helping a lot.

This comes down to the old question of DDR400 with good timings, or DDR500 with okay timings. The exceptions are OCZ's 4000VX and Mushkin's Redline, but they're already hard to find and overpriced. (Unless you're looking at 2-gig kits, in which case look at the Ballistix kit. It does DDR500 at good timings.)

It's more a matter of preference and personal application usage than a cut-and-dry answer. Just be happy knowing that any Athlon64 will make the most of any RAM you give it- and yes, you'll be able to crank DDR500 all the way up to its max with your 3500, even without significantly overclocking. Remember that A64's are very flexible with their multipliers.

OK thanks a lot man you helped out a lot. I going to stick with the DDR500 2GB kit that I was thinking of. It has 3-4-3-8 timings but supposedly can be easily oc'd

No problem, don't forget about your follow-up visit once you get it up and running! :p

(Edit:
Wow, that's unnerving. My daily post average right now is 6.66.)

yeah lol that wont be for a little while since I'm still thinking and researching hardware...also it costs money :p Its always fun and easy to find all the parts you want but funding is another task!
