DDC Pump Orientation?

*Insert sexual orientation joke here :p* I am doing a new build using one of these pumps from dangerden and due to EXTREME space limitations (see my worklog ;) ) I may need to install the pump "on its side." Installing the radiator in the position I have it does not leave enough space on the bottom of the case for the pump. If I raise the radiator up, then there will be a gap in the side panel below it, it will not be blowing directly on the components I want it to, and more of the air it is pushing will be obstructed by the 5 1/4" drive bracket.

In the above picture, the right side is the front of the case, and is where I would horizontally mount the pump. I assume that it is best to mount it with the inlet on top, however I don't know if mounting it in this position effects the noise or vibration of the pump, not to mention performance. Any insight would be helpful. :cool:
 
I don't know where I found it here on [H], but someone actually mounted theirs the way you want to mount yours. Sorry I don't have any more info on it, but I know theirs worked, but I'm unsure of any negative drawbacks. Does the pump have a booklet with it. I know my D5 pump came with one showing allowable mounting positions.
 
oh, another solution that would probably work the BEST would be to go to home depot or something and buy those little aluminum "L brackets". Just screw some into where you want the pump mounted, and it could remain in the proper upright mounting position.

They make all different types and sizes. Here's an example.

If your are going to mount it on its side just make suer the inlet barb is facing up... the pump relies alot on gravity to provde water and does not "suck" well... I would have a small res above the pump, well actually I do :), and it works great

Hmm thanks, I hadn't thought of that! I think I will go check out the depot this afternoon. That could open up several other locations and could make routing the tubing a lot easier... :D
 
my modded DDC+ is mounted um on one of its sides so the inlet faces the front of my case whilst the outlet is vertical goign up to my block. its a regualr regular thing i see. actually, with the ddc ive seen it mounted in every direction. upside down, beside a drive bay, against a wall, etc etc. knock yerself out!
 
I have my DDC mounted on its side in a drive bay and have had no issues.

I think the only way you can't run the DDC is with the inlet facing down. Other than that you're fine.

How are you routing your loop? Is there room to run the tubing from the CPU around the end of the video card and into the GPU block, or are you going to run it over the top? I can't make it out from the photos.

My initial reaction to the pictures is that a single pass radiator would make your tube routing a lot easier. You could put the pump sideways on the front wall pumping straight into the rad, a simple run from the far end of the rad into the CPU, CPU -> GPU (however is best), and GPU -> tee/(micro)res -> pump.

The way the BI X-flows (and most others Ive seen) are, having the barbs loacted on opposite corners also works to your advantage. The barb near the front of the case would be near the floor - almost inline with the pump, and the rear barb would be higher - making for a graceful curve into the CPU block. That's just gravy though. The major advantage is that the radiator would be cutting out almost a foot of tubing from your loop. Also the slightly decreased radiator thickness could help out your airflow situation.

I'm not trying to stir up the single pass/dual pass debate. It just seems to me like the top priority for this build has to be clean routing. And for that a single pass would do you a lot better. Either way, good luck man. That's a great casemod concept. I hope it works out well no matter what you choose to do with the layout.

to be onesst i wouldnt entirely agree with you. in a SMALL loop such as this where the height the water will travel verticlaly is VERY small, the actual operating power of the ddc is enough. remember, the INLET sucks water, the outlet pushes. they work in tandem to push water around. shoot you can have a pump in the highest part of your loop if you want its jsut usually not smart cuz you might get bubbles trapped in yer pump housing before you can bleed or it might no be the most efficient layout. but i dont think the gravity thing is as important as i gather you were making it.
 
An engineer from Laing replied to my question about this. Basically, the inlet needs a certain amount of pressure coming in to avoid cavitation. To increase pressure, mount the pump at a low spot, and try to face the inlet upwards if possible. That being said, my system has the pump placed low, but inlet facing down. I am having no problems since the loop is small and the pump is undervolted.

[edit] Using two pumps doesn't solve any problem other than providing redundancy should one fail. It also adds 18 more watts of heat to your system.

any reservoir placed above or slightly above the sideways mounted DDC would be plenty sufficient.
