DD-WRT Router, F@H Linux Client?

I know this is probably a dumb question, but if DD-WRT routers run miniaturized Linux kernels, why hasn't anyone put a DC client on one?

I could think of two reasons, but wanted to know if these were valid in the first place or if there were others.
1) Routers don't have storage of their own and very little RAM, so there would be no space for workdata. This might be resolved by treating it like a diskless client, but that still doesn't overcome the RAM limitation.
2) Weak processor would take forever and a day to crunch WUs. Might have been resolved at some point, but Stanford discontinued the timeless ones.

Any other thoughts?
 
Linux-based DD-WRT-capable routers run a special embedded Linux flavor that is stripped down to run taking up only several MB of space, 4 MB of flash memory total in mine, and mine has 16 MB system RAM and a 200 Mhz processor.

It is definitely hardware limited for folding, though for home routing it is perfectly fine. ;)
 
There's just not enough power in a standard router to do this... Some of us are using full computers for routers and those are running F@H, but besides that there's not much that can be done.
 
Yeah, the memory and storage limitations pretty much eliminate WRT54G's from running F@H, not to mention that the CPU architecture isn't supported by stanford.

However, unhappy_mage was working on making one of those routers work as a foldserver, so you could run a bunch of stripped-down boxen (just CPU, MB, RAM) behind it. Paging mage.....

Those 5-way melts are taking 4-5 days on my 2ghz athlon XP. It'd take months on a 200mhz mips chip. Plus, my wrt54g has a hard enough time keeping up with torrents and a bandwidth logger, let alone pegging it to 100% util all the time.
 
if you search this forum...you should come across a thread where the mage was trying to work his wizardry to get those things to act as a foldserver. As for running the client itself, you have to remember that the cpu in those are a MIPS variety therefor not able to full run the calcs needed by the F@H client. So yea....talk to mage about how that foldserver router is coming :)

The fold-server on wrt54g offer is still open, but the only person who tried it reported that his router rebooted often with the modified DD-WRT on it. I'm willing to help you get it working, but the router itself won't be folding, just normal x86 machines connected to it.
 
Ingenious as that is, I don't have any diskless boxes with which to test it right now... All of my computers are either outside of my house, or at home running dedicated tasks: file server, media center, notebook, gaming station, etc.

If I can pick up some older parts (P3-era), you'll definitely be the first person who finds out, mage. :)

I will (can) give it another spin later this year, when I will have two routers available. Right now the WRT54g is my only internet connection so I cannot afford to play around with it.
 
this is probably covered by the not supported hardware tag, but what about an arm processor? my phone sits in a cradle all day, it could use the workout lol

still isnt a x86 based processor....and with the current WU's out, they would take FOREVER....and that was the answer i got about my treo .
