I'd like to have similar performance & reliability to a WRT54GL w/DD-WRT in a wired-only package, with VPN tunneling, and has at least 6 LAN ports on it.

Does such a thing exist? Or is a WRT54GL with some tweaking and a 10/100 switch still the way to go?

Yep, pretty much. Although you can get a buffalo whr-g54s for only $35, it's just as good as the wrt54gl and totally compatible with ddwrt. Actually, if you're not using the WLAN port for your cable modem or whatever, you can set the VLANs so it's on the same LAN as ports 1-4 and get 5 usable ports out of it. I just figured out how to do that today, works great.

I need the WAN port for the WAN. ;)

Couldn't find the Buffalo locally without a long wait. I didn't mind the $72 (cdn) price I paid yesterday for the WRT54GL... Its the $230 x 2 that I paid for the other flakey junk that's got me choked.

I flashed it and deployed it today. Not even worried about VPN yet. At least I have port forwarding and remote admin back now.
