DD 7800 block eta?

TBA? or TBD? Although that obviously doesn't help you very much hehe. You can always go with a GPU only block and air cool the ram. I am kind of curious to see if the 7800 block will just be a rehash of the 6800 or if they will make some real improvements to the design. My gut tells me it is a rehash made to fit the 7800.

So where have you heard of this happening? I have never seen a case of any card snapping under the weight of the nv68. The mounting is designed to keep the card from warping under the weight. You could always get a card keeper if you are worried about the weight though.


As for people copying others designs.... The nv68 came out before the AC 6800 block... OMG WTF HAX0RZ!!!!1111oneoneone they copied AC before they even released the block!!! :rolleyes:
 
i had an nv68 and it does warp the card pretty bad, I havent heard of them actually snapping either(it was an exageration in the attempt to make humor), however I had to brace mine because it was warping so bad it was starting to not make contact with some of the ram sinks, and if you look i think you will find many people had to do things to support the heat sink out side of the card just holding the weight(2 pounds of copper)

Sorry, but you are incorrect. Perhaps you are thinking about the revision 2 AC block? All the AC blocks have a very common design and they have been making this design for quite a while (i.e. ATi 9800, Nvidia 5900). Sorry you lose ;)

Nope, I am talking about a block for the 6800 that cools both GPU and RAM. I know that AC had blocks for hte 9800 and the 5900. However, DangerDen beat AC to market by about 5 weeks with a 6800 block.

Please dont try and get into the "well AC thought of cooling the RAM first", because if you want to get into that I could say "DD was founded before AC therefore AC stole the idea of using water to cool a computer from DD" :rolleyes:

We stand upon the achievements of those that came before us. If everything were completely 100% original we would be nowhere right now. There are bound to be similarities between things....but in the case of your argument, the similarities are quite insignificant, and more idea based than design based.

According to the archives on DD's weby, the 6800 blocks started to ship on Tuesday August 3rd 2004 (the last blurb about them alluded to tuesday and the post was made on Sunday the 1st). Info about them was comming out as far back as early 2004. I sent an email to HighSpeedPC and asked about when the Innovatek NV40 coolers came out (I think these were first out), and another one to Aqua Computer Berlin as well (I might not/probably won't get a response form AC).

Innovatek sort-of started the full cooler "craze" with Gainward, after the "failed " BladeRunner/Bit-Tech collaboration with Gainward in 2003.

Nevermind about that e-mail to Aqua Computer Berlin, it seems that the AC frontpage (http://aqua-computer.de/) lists the blocks in the September 2004 time-frame (post was made on Sep 22). On November 10th, a post indicates that the Revision 2 blocks, with the spring loaded copper core are comming out. So it seems that DD is a month and a half ahead of Aqua Computer, so this still leaves Innovatek :)

theres renderings of the 7800gtx block up at Dangerden, looks exactly the same as the nv68 with holes drilled in it for the mounting screws to me....

If he feels the need to wrongfully flame certain companies then let him put himself down to the level of the console fandweebs or the video card fanatics if he wants to.
 
I would suggest that you think twice about the DD 7800 cooler. From the pic above it appears not to be watercooling the power mosfets. That means DD decided to let you guys use the stock mosfet sinks. So be prepared to make sure you have some good airflow over that part of the card.
 
The stock mosfet heatsinks will be more than adequate for overclocking. Unless you want to do some uber leet overclocking, but in that case you will be getting Viper John to professional modify your card for higher voltages and what not.

because even PWM on nf4 are fine with stock heatsinks. PWM in general dont need to be all that cool.
 
is that why my 6800gt at 1.4v had its mosfet sink get literaly burning hot and thats with the rad fans blowing on it so it wasnt completely dead air... had to add cooling to my fets added benefit was cool memory which = higher clock

the dd block DOESNT cool the mosfets, memory cooling is useless, just a little air flow over the stock 6800 gt heat sinks on one side of the heat pipe made the sinks practically room temp

its like water cooling system memory, its just plain silly unless your feeding them 3v in a volt mod or somthing, and in that case you wouldnt be a noob and use the dd water block youd use some nice heat sinks and at least pelt a normal water block, or phase change it ;)

absolutly no reason to run any of the total card cooling mechanisms, i get cooler temps on my 6800 with the prescott feeding it heat then you guys get on your athlon-64 water loops and the nv68, and thats a insult considering you paid twice as much for less performance

A prescott at 4GHz will only raise the water temp by around 0.5C, so that isn't really an argument there. That being said, I agree that GPU+Ram coolers are not needed and that GPU only coolers + Ram sinks are the best way to go.

That means the mosfet sinks are doing their job. Unless you are having power stability problems with the card then you know that everything is working just fine. Also the 7800GTX consumes less power and puts out less heat than the 6800, so if you had no stability problems with your overvolted (?) 6800 then a 7800 should be just fine. If the 7800 really needed more than just mosfet sinks then you wouldn't be seeing such highly clocked retail cards on air cooling.

Yes that is why the mosfet heatsink on my 7800GTX is hot to the touch as is the ram. There is a reason companies make the waterblock to cover all of the components that actually get hot.

One spin could be DD is lazy and not providing a complete cooling solution instead of defending the design.
 
I feel the watercooled ram solution blocks are stupid. You're far better off saving the money for something better.

I know, I for one, will be hitting much higher clocks than anyone with a RAM cooled solution, as even though the maze 4-1 GPU doesn't cool the ram, it does sport a 40mm peltier, which keeps everything pretty cool. I look forward to using it on my new 7800GTX, which is coming refurbed via newegg for $420.

Cooling or not cooling the RAM will have absolutely nothing to do with how high your clocks go on the GPU.....:confused:
 
the mosfets are designed to handle the heat, that is why they are not built into cooling designs. They do not need to be cooled, like the others where saying.

Yes it will...there is not a single GPU+RAM cooler that cools the GPU as well as a good GPU only solution.

How convenient that you actually failed to read a single word I wrote :rolleyes: Heatsinks are supposed to be hot *gasp* really?!?! Just because something gets hot does not mean it needs to be watercooled. There are plenty of electronic components that get very hot to the touch, and many of them dont even have heatsinks on them *double gasp*! The fact is that certain electronic components benefit much more from operating at lower temperatures, complex processor cores are one of these. However, memory and PWM do not need to remain as cool as a processor to operate optimally.

Stop trying to smear your FUD over everything that is not "perrrty". And please, read posts and try to wrap yourself around the concepts that people are saying before you reply.
 
I'm just saying that my memory OC, using ramsinks, will probably be close to the watercooled OC. My core OC will be way beyond a gpu+ram cooler, and the block was less expensive too.
 
my card was unstable until i added cooling to the mosfets, invalidating you guys whole discussion, and about the gtx, it actualy consumes slightly more power then the 6800 ultra, nvidia was bragging about performance/watt not total power consumption compared to older cards

my card is only running at 1.4v(6800 ultra) and my prescott runs at 1.55v, yet a cpu hot enough to run at 60C load doesnt heat the water more then 0.5C? is that why when i had my northwood 2.8b in there i got 38C load on my gpu compared to 46C load?

Yes the processor only heats the water about 0.5C from waterblock inlet to waterblock outlet. I am assuming that your water is flowing around 2lpm (low to moderate flow) and that your prescott is dumping out 100W of heat (just cause its a nice even number). If your temperature goes up so much then it tells you a very nice thing about your watercooling loop, you are lacking in the radiator department. You will likely see a large improvement by getting a larger radiator, or adding a second one.

water doesnt heat up, adding second fan to my double heater core made sure of that

prescott outputs somwhere around 150 watts of heat not 100 i got a d5 and it appears to move a ton of water, i just assumed the prescott heated up the water a lot but the rad cooled it right back down AND with everything fully loaded i feel the inlet for the rad, its warm compared to ambient, the outlet, its same as ambient temp, after the cpu it gets warm the gpu doesnt seem to do much to the heat its mostly the cpu's doing


also i find it hard to belive that two 80 cfm fans on a rad isnt enough cooling if its not i could add another rad, i sure got a pump powerful enough to handle it, would i get significantly lower temps doing such? that would be a nice thing to hear :)
 
GPH doesn't really matter a whole ton, as long as it is "enough". Having too little (for your setup, which varies greatly from person to person) will harm performance a good deal, where as having more than enough will not do much for performance.

I would say that 2 80mm fans really isn't that much cooling power, especially if the radiator is sized for 80mm fans, such as the black ice micro, etc.

The thing you'll see isn't immediately higher temps, you'll see a slow rise in temps, due to insufficient heat rejection, until it balances out, and then stops climbing.

Personally, I went with a BIX2 with 2 120mm panaflos (higher CFM/dba versions), and all it is cooling is a x800pro+90watt peltier, and the nf4 chipset (no CPU). This should be a similar, to slightly lower heatload compared to your setup, and I feel the radiator is a tad bit overkill, but not by much. If I was adding a CPU, I would have gone with a better radiator than the BIX2, such as the thermochill models.

Sure the P4 heats up the water, but the radiator probably doesn't take that warmer water and turn it into ambient temperature water. The only thing I've ever seen able to do that is the "bong cooler", which can even sport sub-ambient temps.

Depending on what size case, and what radiator you have now, I might even just dump the old radiator (especially if it is only 80mm x2 size), and buy a far better one. The key is sizing your heatload to your heat rejection. Personally, I feel the best place to start is with a quality radiator, rather than throwing a ton of CFM on top of it from the get go. The thermochill line, although expensive, is currently, imo, the best out there. Especially if you need a compact radiator, I would go with the one designed by cathar.
