ED is running another sale on their DCS line up. Up to 70% off. Ends 8AM on the 20th, Moscow time.

If you're looking to try a flight sim out, buy Flaming Cliffs 3 for $12:
http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/shop/modules/dcs_flaming_cliffs_3/

If you're looking to try a flight sim out but really don't have much money, buy the standalone F-15C for $3:
http://www.digitalcombatsimulator.com/en/shop/modules/eagle/

Much better value to pay $9 more for 5 more planes though.

Some of the newer titles, like the F-86 and Dora are down to $15. Full list of titles & prices:

Remember, the base game is free with two planes (Su-25T and unarmed TF-51D Mustang). So you can always download the game for free... but I recommend at least getting the F-15C for $3 as it is much more forgiving than the free aircraft.

What can you do in DCS World + F-15C for $3? Just fly around or are there missions?

There are missions, and you can dogfight in multiplayer. But if you have 12 bucks, I would get Flaming Cliffs 3 instead. You get the F-15C, A-10A, Su-25, and some more stuff, and missions to go with them all.

Everything game wise, although you'll only have three flyable planes. The F-15C is a fighter interceptor, and a pretty good dog fighter to. ;) The Su-25T is a tank killer, although rather unforgiving for new players as it flies like a brick. The TF-51D is an unarmed trainer, which is only good for flying around.

You can play MP and use the mission editor (think ArmA style) which is where you will spend most of the time. MP missions can be co-op or adversarial. There are also some missions and maybe a campaign which ship with the game but I honestly never tried them. I typically play online, casual missions with a friend. The mission editor is decently powerful and rather simple to use.

MP will be getting a big overhaul eventually with dedicated servers. That will come after the new game engine (EDGE), which is supposed to come out in the next month or so. All updates to the base game including the new engine are free. You'll get free updates to any aircraft you own to.

If you can swing it, I'd go for FC3 as you get a 5 more planes for $9 more. But if you're really unsure if you'll like it, the F-15C is your best bet. It is very easy to fly and the systems are not that complicated either.

You boys keep trying to push this garbage. Starforce DRM (even with steam) and no steam activation with DCS store keys.

Do us all a favor and drop the starforce. And while you're at it fix the Oculus support.

Do you have nothing better to do than follow around threads about DCS and shit on them because you have a hatred for starforce?

Eagle Dynamics actually will reset the starforce limit for you, so it's not as much of an issue as it is with other games. It's not that bad (while I agree its lame and wish they would use full steam drm).

Agreed with this. They also refill a used activation every month I believe. After using FC2 on two different PCs (two different people online with others at the same time) for a number of years and upgrades, we never ran out of the activation limit. With DCS World you can't use a CD key for two people and be online at the same time anymore, BTW. :p IMO they should dump it to, but I've had less issues with it (zero) than I have had with Steam who have no problem charging you for out of stock items. As for Steam, Valve stopped allowing people to activate their CD keys there. Understandable because Valve does not make a profit from those sales while they must pay for the bandwidth and other infrastructure to host the game. Although any CD key bought from Steam works on the ED website to.

I am also going to recommend Combined Arms at $6, simply because it offers a nice way to control ground vehicles in a sandbox style environment.

In for FC3!

And now I need a joystick...

Shop around for the X52Pro. I bought mine for $130 or so a few years back. It is really worth it over the standalone joysticks.

If you can afford it, look into the X55 (split throttle).

If you have even more money, look into CH Products and Thrustmaster Warthogs. :p The Saiteks should work well for Star Citizen to if you're going to play that eventually.

Cool... I picked up a saitek x45 stick and throttle at a thrift store for 3 bucks a few months back. Now I'll have something to try it out with.

Edit. Damn... Looks like I missed it.

Easy there, I had to ask myself if I really wanted to spend $12 on the game. $200 on a HOTAS at this point would be instanity :)

I am disappointed the newer CH Products sticks don't have twist sticks for rudder control or decent throttles on the side. The currently CH sticks don't look very far separated from what I was using in 1994 to play Tie Fighter.

Just check on Steam over the next few days. They often will follow up with a sale there. If not, December will be the Q4 sale and the Steam sales.

Hopefully there is a place which runs sales on the X52Pro. I paid $130 a few years back, and I recall them doing down to $115 on sale. Probably the best joystick to buy is the Saitek FLY 5, although it is rather pricey itself at $60:

If anyone bought FC3 or the individual FC3 planes and has a X52Pro and wants a profile, PM me and I'll send you my control setup. I don't have advanced functions mapped but I do have the most essential ones for basic operation and combat which is what I use 90% of the time.

I want an updated tie fighter... badly...
