DC Vault 2

DooKey - If you dont mind my asking, Are you crunching with just the 3 Nvidia cards in your sig? Or do you have some others as well?

I just ordered a AMD 7870 to use in a few other workflows but will probably crunch with it part time as well. I would like to order a second but I may hold off until the 8000 series comes out.

I'm crunching with 2x GTX 680, 2x GTX 660Ti, 2x GTX 650Ti.

Funny you mention that - there has been a small flurry of them over the past 4-5 days, about 12,000 units/3 years runtime. I managed to get 2 units for 5h40m...

Won't be seeing a medal in that any time soon!

Yes, I know there were this past week and forgot to post. That is why I am bringing up that next week we should have more. Being the hardest badges to obtain, you got fight for every one possible. I find that those days are the best time to fire up old slow PC's and to turn on extra virtual machines in hopes of snagging them. If the old beasts get them, you can get the badge muuuuuuch quicker. I currently have the Emerald badge for BETA and have a long way to go to get Sapphire.

Also, YoYo@home now has a nativeBOINC capable app. for Harmonious Trees.

Yes, you've got it. I'm not sure what happens to the points earned prior to amending that though.

I noticed on the site that they had some fine print saying to post a request to the forum if you notice that you have any discrepancies between user names... So I did - I'll let you know what happens.

I just salvaged an Optiplex 330 Core 2 Duo and am putting it on the TV in the bedroom for the occasional bed time Netflix/Hulu marathon. So, that is 2 more cores to the cause and possibly a low end GPU.

I also hit my 1,000,000 point goal at Numberfields, so I've detached from there for a bit to focus more resources towards Sudoku. Sudoku is currently at about 1/4 of my goal.

For those interested, I also just noticed that Gerasim has work again.

What, bronze for 1000 points, silver for 5K, and gold for 25K? Take forever to get any at my current 70ppd or whatever... :D

okay, I'll go RTFA now...

So, right now this is how the badges are done.
To get a bronze star, you need to have at least 20 different apps (not projects) crunch up to 100 hours per app. To get 5 bronze stars requires 100 apps with 100 hours per app. It is possible to have a Sapphire star and a bronze star or a combination of the different levels.

Here are some upsides:
1. Encourages supporting multiple projects/apps.
2. Points are irrelevant. The more core/threads you contribute, the quicker your badge comes.

Here is the downsides:
1. Badges are not retroactive. So, the run time is based on when badges were first announced.
2. If you only support a few projects, you many never get enough apps built up. WCG currently has 10 active apps/projects, a soon to end intermittant, and BETA which technically could add an additional 10 apps but is unlikely to reach 100 hours anytime soon. Even Ibercivis has over 30 apps, but they aren't always active. PrimeGrid has multiple, so it is possible to rack up at least 20 apps with just a hand full of projects.
3. If projects end prematurely, it may be wasted time if you don't have enough alternative aps.

Just read the boards over there and saw that chart (http://wuprop.boinc-af.org/badges.php), and I have to say damn, that's a bit confusing at first! But then again, the only badges I pay a lot of attention to are my WCG ones - almost half way to Gold on all 10 current active ones... Maybe then I'll go after some Yoyo badges!

Muon stats are live again. We're slowly gaining ground on the next spot. Keep up the good work guys!

Jathanis, I would recommend getting to Sapphire on your WCG projects first. They are more likely to end before the YoYo ones. Or at least take a peek at Sekerob's charts to see which ones are expected to end soon.

Oh...and don't forget that there should be another round of BETA's this week.

I have also noticed, that I'm still the only team member running nativeBOINC. http://www.nativeboinc.org/site/detail_team/107 There are a couple DCVault projects that have compatible apps. Milkyway, YoYo, and PrimeGrid. Please take the time to look into running nativeBOINC. I run it on a couple phones right now. It is Android based.

Yep, great work chaps! I'm certainly worrying less about maintaining our gains :) Unfortunately some home improvements and cost savings will cause a tail off in my production for quite a while. I'll still try to help where I can.

With only 8 cores and one dedicated to helping Primegrid, getting to Gold on everything I have left will still take a few months. Going for Ruby will take me another 4+ months, and Emerald won't be until sometime next summer at the earliest... Saphire? Try late 2015! :D That's why I'm hoping to eventually put together an inexpensive multe core system - maybe a dual Opteron box with a cheap ebay pair of 6128 or equivalents. I'd love a 4P, but I can't afford the $650 mobo, and it would probably go back on F@H anyways! 2P wouldn't be enough ppd to tempt me to go back over there, assuming I can ever find a 2P G34 mobo for less than $400...

I have also noticed, that I'm still the only team member running nativeBOINC.
I looked into it, but my phone's battery is already close to end of life - I'm afraid it will kill my phone too fast!

I only run mine while plugged in charging. It has been running since June of 2012 and has had absolutely no problems. It doesn't get any hotter then playing a few games either. That was one of the many earlier fears and still probably the biggest one. However in reality, they stand up pretty well. The down side to the ARM processors is FPU's. If the application uses heavy FPU utilization, then performance tanks. This requires re-writing the code in assembly to optimize. So, they aren't for everything just yet.

On a side note, it is good to see the numbers we are putting up at OProject. Razor_FX_II and phoenicis are tearing it up. Razor_FX_II is also tearing up WUProp. Everyone should be attached to WUProp regardless of what project they support. Hopefully other members will add the NCI apps too. Badge hunters can also get badges in both of those NCI projects.

The Commandos have also been doing really good at the DC-Vault the last few days. Keep up the good work peeps.

Suduku currently only has 14% left. They are decreasing about 1% / month. So, I should easily hit my goal. However, I don't know if they will get more work for another goal or not and I also don't know if there will be a rush at the end to get last minute quotas. 1 million points is my stopping point since the project doesn't have a strong cause for me. After that goal, it will be a mix of ABC/WCG primarily for CPU.

Bummer I thought that maybe we could make a run at another place in Muon with a March Challenge. :) At any rate good luck with the home improvements! I'll just have to add a couple more machines to Muon.

Optima seems to have work going out. They have been dry for quite a while.

We just lost a spot in correlizer and 40 vault points. I'm going to throw some more cores on it.

Thanks for the good wishes. I should still be able to help out on team pushes some and in fact have managed to get a couple of additional rigs back up for a little warmth in the absence of central heating. One is finishing off SoB tasks whilst the other is on GPUGrid and Muon.

I set up 3 more single core Dells (1 is HT) that will crunch full time for at least a few months.

WCG BETA's are starting. I managed to pull 72 of them.

Yeah...I was at work logging into home systems right at the end of my shift switching settings over. Luckily they were still going out when I got home and could change the last remaining few. It seems to always happen when I'm getting off work or right before the nightly update where I can't change my preferences for an hour.

Oh well...I still have 48 more to go. I currently have Beta Testing 835,457 (WCG points) 1,361 (Results) 1:073:23:45:01 (Run time), so this will be a nice bump towards the Sapphire badge.

Well...most BOINC projects have a forum that you can post recruitments for. However, they would really only be affective at highly active forums like WCG, SETI, or GPU Grid. I still talk to my friends, but most just don't seem interested. They do however let me borg their systems from time to time.

Maybe we should start promoting our team in the Hot Deals section when we post items. Just mention how awesome that new video card would perform for those projects. Maybe even create guilds within some of the popular RPG's.

Perhaps going to forums at other organizations and spreading the word. If it is a place that discusses/supports cancer, that would be a great way to get people on board for WCG.

So is it possible to run a VM in the background set to only snag beta units when they come out, while running normal WCG units on the regular install? Has anyone tried that? I'm thinking that way when you realize the betas are out and downloaded, the regular BOINC client could be manually paused until the VM BOINC client runs out of work...

And now you are headed to the dark side. To answer your question, you absolutely can do it. Just set the virtual machines to a different profile or you could just set it to no new work until you see the announcement and then change their setting. I manually change them because if you have them sitting hungry, then BOINC will back off how often it asks for work. A manual update resets that. So, if I'm really trying to get BETA, I manually update anyways and am already tweaking the client. That also means that I can just change the default preferences which will adjust all profiles. Don't forget to also have your NCI apps attached in the VM's as well.

Since WCG restricts work download for BETA's to just one per thread, you can get more work by using the VM's. For example, if my i7 had 4 VM's, I could pull 8 WU's per VM and 8 for the main client for a total of 40 possible WU's. Without any VM's, I would only get 8 at a time. So, if you wanna maximize your badge progression, then VM's are a necessity.

On a side note, make sure you vote for Jathanis for [H]ard DC'er of the Month http://hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1745064

We need a recruitment drive of some sort. Any ideas?
I agree. Our numbers have never been super large but heres a good indicator of current production: http://stats.free-dc.org/stats.php?page=userteamcomb&team=[H]ard|OCP

There are a couple dozen active crunchers on there and we might have a few more on non-BOINC projects. I think we could start by reaching out to our current members (here or via PM) and see if they would like to come and join an official member list or throw out any recruitment ideas.

Then I think that starting back up the monthly challenges really kind of gets people motivated to work on new rigs and if we make some new posts about new monthly pushes we might be able to get some passer-bys to join us.

We could always advertise the monthly challenges in some of the other subforums to see if anyone wants to come join the team.
Anyone else have any thoughts?

Edit: BTW I just got my AMD 7870 in. It will be installed this weekend!

Wow, thanks! I've been so busy at work with annual budgets, a coworker leaving next Friday, and setting up interviews to replace her, I totally missed the Nomination thread for the month! It's quite an honor to even be thought of in that group, as I've never been one of the "big" folders/crunchers...

And thanks, too, Razor, for the kind words! I'll do my best to continue trying to live up to the [H]orde's high level of excellence! Now, as soon as I can get that tax return check... Still trying to figure out how to join the 4P club for as close to $1K as possible... :D

Your welcome Jathanis.

I too am about to get some production boost. My cousin is having me upgrade a video card in her daughters desktop for gaming and building herself an 8 core/thread box with a top of the line video card. Both of which will be crunchers when not gaming.

Edit: This last WCG BETA run netted me 30 days of CPU run time towards Sappire and I still have one work unit on a netbook that will bring me 2 more days.

Only a couple days left to vote for [H]ard DC'er of the month and Jathanis has a pretty good chance to win. If you haven't voted, please do. The Commando's need more BOINC representation.

OK I need a little advice from the Horde. I received my AMD 7870 and installed it this weekend. I've been putting it through the paces to full test its capabilities and most of the time it seems to work pretty good. However, I have run into a problem that I have never seen before.

When running BOINC I get some artifacts ( black and blue blocks ) on the desktop. Usually just in small portions of the screen and if I right click the desktop and select refresh it all goes away, at least for a little while. It seems to be worse under Milkyway, but I have seen it very briefly when running Primegrid. I ran an older game and the FurMark stress test (fullscreen) and didnt see any kind of artifacts. So it only seems to do it under BOINC.

The GPU is staying very cool (never more than 70C, typically around 58C). The system never shows any other signs of instability, and the Windows interface is still relatively smooth even when crunching.

Do I have a bum video card? Any anyone else ever seen anything like this?

Are you running a single unit at a time or are you running multiples under an app_info.xml file?

So far just a single unit at a time. I wanted to start simple. Ever seen anything like that on a GPU?

That is odd. Your not over clocking it are you? Assuming you have the latest drivers as well? Every projects apps are different, so have you tested WCG HCC or POEM yet? PrimeGrid is usually a very stable app, so I would say it has to be your setup or your card.

I can't remember where I read it, but someone had troubles gaming with that card and doing the same thing. They went to the 12.x drivers and it fixed it. So, you may want to try a few different drivers.

No overclocking, just stock clocks. Latest 13.1 drivers from AMD. POEM is working great. It only uses about 40% of the GPU but I dont see any artifacts on the project. The rest of the setup is the same workstation I've used for quite some time now. The 550ti I pulled out was stable.

The only thing that I can come up with is that the card is bad/defective (at least partially).

Probably worth a shot before I send it back. Maybe I'll underclock the card if that doesnt do the trick just to see.

Just seems so weird that it seems to run graphics just fine but number crunching makes it artifact. Thanks Gil.

If I recall correctly, the case I knew of was only with certain games but not all. So, this could be similar. They were using a Sapphire card.

oh yeah I think I may have com across a similar thread. Seemed to be a trend in Sapphire cards, but my card in an XFX.

Ironic, I just RMA'd an nVidia 210 from them and picked up a XFX 5450 for $10 after rebate this week too. The 210 was burned up and they replaced it for free. They had OK customer service, but they took their sweet time replying each time. I haven't been impressed with their products so far. Good for the price that I have paid, but I only get them on insanely cheap deals.

Amazingly that seemed to work. So far... I ran a few WUs and no artifacts yet. I'll keep you posted. Thanks for troubleshooting with me Gil. Hopefully this holds...I really didnt want to send the card back!
