DC Vault 2

DooKey...on a side note, you could always install BOINC in a virtual machine if you can't get it locally. Let me know if it was a Domain Controller or not so that I know to stop looking into it.

Yeah, my Server 2012 Essentials is a Domain controller. I suspected from my limited research that this is what was causing the problem. I wonder if I create a Windows 7 VM if that will work for me?

It should, because the Admin rights in the Virtual Machine would be based on that system not the domain controlled host. So, assign it however many CPU's (number of threads) and how much ram and you should be good. I run an Ubuntu VM at my job this way. Keep in mind though that you can't do GPU work through the VM yet. So, don't waste time trying. If you want to add the NCI projects, I recommend using multiple virtual machines because some projects limit how many of their work units you can run at a time. Each VM shows up as a separate host. I would also recommend installing as a service on the VM's just in case you have accounts set up to be logged into manually.

Point me to the SoB app and I'll run it on my server. Since I upgraded from WHS 2011 to Server 2012 Essentials I can't run BOINC projects. Maybe I can run SoB?

Also, I like the idea of a poll/vote or maybe we should form a 3 man committee that sets targets for the Commandos. Let me know as I'm willing to donate time.

Sorry, the time difference left it a bit late for me to respond last night. Looks like Razor's covered all the bases on the SoB setup question. You can download the client directly from the same page as the prime.txt file but I think it's v27.7 rather than v27.9. Thanks for the SoB help DooKey not to mention the offer of time should a poll be the consensus. Not sure how many OKs we should get before we give it a go? Almost certainly more than just the three of us :D

I'm still focused on the DCVault (as opposed to only BOINC). I'm not throwing in the towel on the Vault after how far we have come. :) It seems to me like we have quite a few crunchers but just "quiet crunchers" (which is fine). Another trend I've noticed is that our team doesn't seem to crunch with a lot of GPUs (except a couple obvious exceptions!), so that might make GPU projects a challenge.

I think that our "monthly efforts" have been a great success and a good way to gain some quick Vault points. I like the idea of a monthly poll post to discuss potential projects and then vote on an effort. I would just want to make sure that everyone feels like they are free to crunch what projects they want (participation in the monthly project is in no way required).

Personally I have kind of gotten wrapped up in WCG and chasing badges before/during/after the Christmas Race, but I just finished my Sapphire badge in C4CW so I think it might be time to change things up. I'll fire up some Muon1 and come join you phoenicis.

If anyone else has thoughts post them here. We dont have any current threats in the Vault but EVGA keep creeping up. They are doing some pretty good crunching over there.

I also got pretty wrapped in WCG badges (it's all your fault;)) - managed to get to Emerald on nearly all projects :) I agree that the result of any poll should place no obligation on team members but rather just provide a bit of co-ordination and fun to the Vault hunters amongst us. And yes, monthly suggestions followed by a vote sounds good to me. Many thanks for the help on Muon.

Any other thoughts from anyone else on the poll (or any other) approach?

I'm sure SoB will run fine - but know that SoB will push your CPU just like Prime searching - extreme heat and will point out any OC issues.

Thanks for the help. My server is now crunching SoB!

I'm still seeing a low participation in the NCI projects.
Okay, chalk one up to peer pressure... I'm in for both WUProp and FreeHAL now. I tried changing the settings for FreeHAL to one per two cores, hoping to run 2 on the Quad plus one WUProp, but right now I'm settling for one of each...

Hey, on a side note, I realized that I just passed 20M total BOINC points with nothing more than two quads, an old 4850 GPU, and an even older 9800GTX+! Just passed my first million on Moo!, two weeks after throwing up my first million in Primegrid. Slow and steady... At this rate I should break back into the top 10 in about, oh... 36 months... (Time for more GPU power! Bring on the tax returns...)

Congrats Jathanis. And your settings for FreeHAL are probably correct. You don't always get the full amount of work. Sometimes on my 8 thread system I will only get 1 or a couple, but when everything is working in optimal I have 8 FreeHAL work units. So, don't worry. I notice that supply of work fluctuates. Since Tobias no longer has the forums, it is hard to see what is going on over there. Last I knew, it was a one person project.

Also, I wanted to note that if you obtain any badges or accomplishments then I had made threads for the projects currently with badges. WCG was already made so I can't take credit for that one. The only one I had not made was Radioactive since I don't have one there due to no detector. Here is the list:

I am upgrading one of my old neighbors computers from an old Dell with a single core P4 2.2GHz processor to a AMD Phenom II 1045T Hex core setup. He lets me borg his system, so this will be a nice boost. Now, I know a lot of people don't like TigerDirect for whatever reason, but I gotta say they have never failed me. I placed the order last night at 8:42PM and the tracking says it is already local and in transit to my house. I only paid for the cheapest shipping they had available. This gives me the whole weekend to setup, run updates, and stress test it with BOINC. Too bad he is an elderly gent. If he was a gamer, I might have convinced him of a nice GPU to let me crunch on.

What, bronze for 1000 points, silver for 5K, and gold for 25K? Take forever to get any at my current 70ppd or whatever... :D

okay, I'll go RTFA now...

It sounds like the badges will be a combination of how long you run each app, so not sure how many badges or exact requirements just yet.

Say No to Schistosoma project on hold

So plan ahead and fill up on work if you don't have a backup project.

I am stock piling SN2S work so that I know I have enough to finish the 5 year goal. So, that will back up Suduku a little further. Now I just hope BETA and DDDT2 doesn't show up before I get my cache back down.

Added 4 cores to the WCG home farm tonight. HP box with a i5-650 (2C, 4T). It's the second HP box with a crashed hard drive to come from a coworker. Both machines had Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 drives (750GB, 1TB). This is the main reason why I buy Western Digital drives. Never had one fail on me yet.

I didn't have ANY trouble with Seagates until right after the Maxtor buyout. Since then I have replaced 1 out of about 20 that I have purchased for myself or customers. WD burned me back in the late nineties. However, the only brand I avoid like the plague is Hitachi. I have yet to see one that didn't have a short life span.

Muon might be a good place to make a semi-push for the next month or so. Moving up one place would give us some nice vault points. I'm thinking all the Commandos just put one machine on Muon and let it roll while we continue our other work with the rest of the gardens/farms.

I'm hoping that my old luck with Seagates holds - I just picked up a 3TB external USB3 drive for backup images and storage at Costco for $100...

And Muon sound fine with me - I can leave one CPU getting WCG badges and put the other on Muon...

Probably goes without saying as I'm already on Muon, but count me in too.

Gave OProject a try on a bunch of VMs. Seems pretty stable although I'm having to stop whilst some local broadband speed issues are resolved.

x2 I might add my 2500K too.

Im afraid my Nvidia 550ti doesnt have too much crunching power but I added it to GPUGrid. Looks like the GPUGrid team is starting to gain momentum. :)

Yeah...I'm catching up to you and have 28 more days at the current production. However, tonight or tomorrow I'm installing that 650ti which will crunch both WCG and GPUGrid. :D

Nice work on SoB fellas. Got one team and i see you have a couple others in your sights!

Looks like GPUGrid is testing/fixing a few new beta units so work is a little short right now. I read on their forums that it shouldn't be long before a full run on the new units however. :)

Just added a 3770K to Muon to go with the i7 970 already crunching Muon. Also received my NCIX $91 after rebate GTX 650Ti today and I'm throwing that into my Primegrid crunching until GPUgrid gets more work.

WCG went down last night and they now have there website partially up. Until it is resolved, you can not upload or download work. I suggest that the WCG exclusive peeps that didn't have a good amount cached to have a standby project going.

Yeah, I noticed that last night - gave me a good reason to move both my machines fully over to Muon for now...

WCG seems to be up now. I am receiving new work and the website seems back in order.

DooKey - If you dont mind my asking, Are you crunching with just the 3 Nvidia cards in your sig? Or do you have some others as well?

I just ordered a AMD 7870 to use in a few other workflows but will probably crunch with it part time as well. I would like to order a second but I may hold off until the 8000 series comes out.

I love how they're rebadging a 5450 and a 6450 to 8000 series cards... Unbelievable... I guess anyone buying lowest end OEM kit gets what they deserve?

Okay, a little help needed - I finally got some points to show up on Muon (DPAD) on stats.free-dc.org, but I did something wrong with my config - I have about 10M points under my old Jathanis/HardOCP account, but the new points show up for Jathanis with no team. How do I combine them/add my team?

Okay, I think I got it - I have to put "[H]Jathanis" as my user name, right?

WCG update...Uplinger posted that there is a strong possibility of more of the recent FAAH BETA's being released some time next week. For those seeking badge upgrades, keep a keen eye on their BETA Announcements forum.

Funny you mention that - there has been a small flurry of them over the past 4-5 days, about 12,000 units/3 years runtime. I managed to get 2 units for 5h40m...

Won't be seeing a medal in that any time soon!
