DC Vault 2

The Lattice Project has work again. This batch seems to only need 300 MB of RAM per task.

Looks like the windows gpu app for poem has finally been released. It requires the latest BOINC pre-release client, v7.03, and right now only works on ATI cards. They're still scratching their heads over an Nvidia bug so that stuffs my involvement for the moment.

Early reports of ppd seem to be in the region of 100K per GPU. For comparison, 2 x SR2s achieved less than that number when I was running the CPU client.

Edit: With the end of the WCG challenge I think I'm going to join the push on Cosmology for a few days to test out the newly installed memory and then drag myself back to looking at the non-BOINC projects at the top of Sazan's last list.

phoenicis - What CPU project did you end up choosing to work on?

Razor - Are you going to stay on ABC for a while?

Ive been debating on whether to focus on ABC, Docking or Cosmology. Last few days I've been putting in some time on Docking. The new 2500K @ 4.2Ghz seems to be pretty rock solid and crunches a fair amount faster than my i7 860 @ 3.0Ghz.

Great work in Poem and Cosmology everyone!

ABC is having server issues tonight and SIMAP is giving out work again, so I switched to SIMAP for the few days of work it will have then I'll go back to ABC for about 400k in points (about a month).

Looks like the Crunching@EVGA team is working their way up the vault as they get their teams created in various projects and get them added to the vault. Good job EVGA crunchers!

Brings back memories of getting the [H]ard|OCP team started just a couple years ago! Time to catch The Knights!

Gotcha. I'll stick on Docking for the rest of the week (Docking has scheduled downtime for the 9th) and then switch over to ABC this weekend and join you for an ABC run. Maybe we can gain some ground.

Sounds like a good plan - maybe I can catch up to you in ABC. My 2700K cranks ABC work units out fast.
I tried running Docking for a few weeks and found that on my Intel CPU's it had issues but on my one and only AMD CPU it ran fine, so I switched until they get that issue fixed.

I bet it does! How fast did you get your 2700K running? I have never used a Sandy Bridge chip before but i was surprised how easy the overclocking went on my 2500K. I didn't want to push it too far for DC'ing but i felt like 4.2 was decent.

Looks like my Docking WUs are finishing in about 1:35 to 1:40 timeframe if your interested for comparison.

Max OC was 5Ghz prime stable but temps on most projects are to hot for my comfort - 70C+, so I set it at 4.6Ghz and run average temps of 55-60C which also keeps my voltages in what I consider the safe zone since there is no clear max volt for these CPUs and I don't want to degrade the chip.

I'm helping out on PSP. With any luck we should be able to snag 4th place and 357 Vault points within a month or so.

Truly outstanding work on Poem and Cosmology guys. Also particularly commendable are the chaps still slogging away at yoyo weeks after the contest finished - they must be having fun.

Nice going everyone!

Nice. That would be a nice jump! Speaking of a nice jump I see we jumped another spot in Majestic12 today. Props to Razor and McCoy for their continued work over there!

I have one quad switched over to ABC. The other one gets switched tomorrow.

Still here on Yoyo. Heating my basement room.

SIMAP should be empty of work in the next day+ then I will be switching over to ABC.

Still - or again - working on OGR-27. Team HardOCP will be at Top 50 in a few days :)

Thats great TheMTZ !
I keep meaning to run some OGR-27 but always get sidetracked with other projects.

Great work on Cosmology everyone!

I am going to help get us at least into the top 100 for ABC.

Good to hear man! Thanks for keeping the [H]ard|OCP ORG-27 team on an upward trend!

Agreed! Looks like you guys will be up to 60th place in another week. Not bad for being in about 120th place a month ago!

Welcome to the ABC team KMac! Good to have you along. I dont think it will take us long to hit the top 100! Maybe a week or so. My production has been steadily climbing but I'm guessing that it will start level off here now that I have all my machines switched over. Crunch ON!

There is some discussion over on whether to remove Wieferich@Home.
http://www.team-ninja.com/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=50705
I'm a little torn on this one - personally I don't like the project application or how it keeps score but on the other hand I hate to see all the [H]ard work SazanEyes and the rest of the Commandos have put in to it go for nothing.
Since I don't have a stake in it I'll leave it to others to voice there opinion on it.

I know there has been lots of hard work done by the Commandos especially SazanEyes but I believe the project has to go. The way I look at it is if the administrators have essentially abandoned the project why haven't we? (by we I mean the Vault)

Just my 2 cents.

Unless the admin rear their heads, I tend to agree that Weiferich should go. However, as has been mentioned, SazanEyes has invested the vast majority of the team's effort which leaves me neutral as far as the ninja thread is concerned.

On a separate note, our Dutch friends didn't seem to like being overtaken on GPUGrid one bit and are in the process of hunting us down like dogs :D The word help comes to mind.

On yet another separate note, a big thank you to the nice fellows at MJ12 who are crunching NFS for us again.

Edit: The DPC GPUGrid output appears to have tailed off considerably today.

What are the chances of getting an updated priority list for those of us aimlessly wandering from project to project after the Yoyo and Christmas challenges?

I believe docking@home is a prime target. I'm getting ready to move there after we gain a couple more spots in cosmology@home. Also, if you have some AMD video cards POEM might be a good place to run them.

This page, courtesy of a particularly helpful chap, DigiK-oz, provides quite a bit of guidance including total point potential and points per position gained. It also provides feedback on team efforts with Cosmology, Poem and ABC showing the fruits of the current Commando pushes.

Docking does indeed look like a prime target.

One thing it doesn’t include, that SazanEyes’s updates do, is how hard it is to move up a place. For example Sazan, Donuts and I will have had to more than double the team’s PSP score to move up a place. Fortunately, the payoff from this should finally happen in the next few days.

p.s. I should be careful abbreviating teammates names for fear that I start being referred as phoeny or something even worse :p

p.p.s Don't forget to vote for our resident DC guru, Razor_FX_II, for DCer OTM.

Well I would assume that the priority list hasnt changed much since Sazan's last posting. Cosmology and ABC have maybe moved down a little on the list but other than that I assume that its fairly close. Anyone looking for a BOINC project to run - Cosmology, ABC and Docking are all good choices. It looks like climbing places in Cosmology will get a little tougher in the next week but there is still lots of easy spots to grab in ABC. Anyone who has a free Nvidia card - GPUGrid is a great place as we are currently making some good progress there.

Anyone who wants to live on the edge and run a non-BOINC project - I assume that dmaine would welcome some help over in Muon1 (DPAD). He has been the lone wolf in that project for a while and is keeping us on the level. :) Likewise with TheTMZ in ORG.

phoney - Thanks for the link. :D Thats a cool stats page that i hadnt seen before. Up 25+ places this month in ABC, Cosmology, and POEM. Looking forward to the points from all the work the three of you are putting in on PSP!

As for me, Im going to stay on ABC for a couple more weeks with Razor and then I'll move back to some more Docking@home.

I'd also like to throw in for a non-BOINC project to look at is 17 or bust. It basically runs Prime 95 and Razor and I were working on that for a while before the Yoyo challenge. We can move up another couple of spots relatively quickly on that one as well. I will probably be moving some of my work force back there in the next few days.

I'm attempting to hold off the forces of evil. If they get closer, i'll toss my 2600k at the project to keep our place while the big boys take on PSP

Congrats to the PSP Combined guys, another place gained and another 357 points!!!

Good work! Congrats to TheMTZ and the PSP crew for reaching their milestones!

Looks like ABC@home is down this morning. If you were running ABC exclusively on any machines, time to go switch projects.

Is there a guide around here somewhere to running SoB? I seem to remember someone making one.

I’ve been fiddling around with the HP Cloud free beta service today. Just in case anybody with equally appalling ubuntu skills is messing with this I thought I’d share the steps I finally settled on after a bit of trial and error.

After applying for the beta and setting up the compute instances (I went for 8 cpu Ubuntu 10.10 flavour), connect via putty using this guide by david12857.

Once done, instead of setting up f@h, set up BOINC with the following command line instructions:

Code:
# apt-get update
# apt-get upgrade –y
# apt-get install boinc-client
With the client installed, you need to amend the config file to enable use of 32 bit applications where 64 bit are apps are unavailable. This was required to be able to run Community Grid’s GFAM tasks.
Code:
# nano /etc/boinc-client/cc_config.xml
Insert <alt_platform>i686-pc-linux-gnu</alt_platform> between the lines <options> and </options> and then Control+X to exit followed by Y and then enter to save as the same file name when prompted.
Credit to Punchy for mentioning this on a Crunching@EVGA post a while ago. Credit to me for remembering :D

The next step is to attach to an individual project. I’ve used docking as the example but have also successfully tested WCG and Cosmology.
Code:
# boinccmd --project_attach http://docking.cis.udel.edu xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Where xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx is your account key copied from your account information on the project’s website.
Code:
# boinccmd --project http://docking.cis.udel.edu update
# boinccmd --set_run_mode always
# boinccmd --set_network_mode always
# boinccmd --project http://docking.cis.udel.edu resume
WCG and Cosmology took off at this point but docking needed a bit of a kick using a client restart.

Code:
# /etc/init.d/boinc-client stop
# /etc/init.d/boinc-client start
Some other useful commands to check status and to connect to the BAM account manager are:

Code:
# boinccmd --get_simple_gui_info
# boinccmd --get_state
# boinccmd --join_acct_mgr http://boincstats.boincstats.com/bam name password
I’m non too sharp with respect to linux or even guides for that matter, so if anybody with a degree of knowledge wants to enhance these instructions please feel to suggest amendments. Not all steps may even be necessary. No pride to step on here.

It’s a bit early to tell but the output seems promising. Each 8 cpu instance seems to be generate about 10K ppd on a project like docking@home.

I’m going to return to my f@h roots for a few days to benchmark the recently reconfigured main rigs and also as a tip of the hat to our folding brethren.

Congrats to the PSP Combined guys, another place gained and another 357 points!!!

Cheers mate. Following the stint folding, I’ll probably crunch some SIMAP and help you build a bit of a buffer against those forces of evil on DPAD.

phoney - Thanks for the link. :D

I really had that coming :)

etothe3ric provided some setup details for SoB on the second page of this thread.

SoB
To Join the Project:
Go to their website www.seventeenorbust.com and click on the “Sign Up” link on the left side. Create a Username and enter your email address. Login to the site with your new username and select the preferences link to add your name to the [H]ard|OCP team.

To Run the Project:
Go to the link Download on the left hand side and get the proper version of the client software. Also download the Prime.txt file and put it in the directory for SoB. Extract the folder and Run “prime95.exe” Make sure you add your username to the Primenet under Test. Other than that just let the client run and your all set the WUs are pretty long though.

I'd like to add that after you download the SoB client of prime 95 from the SoB (v26.3) website go and download the latest client of prime 95 from mersenne.org, (v26.6 and soon 27.1 or 27.2) and delete the old v26.3 .exe. This allows much faster crunching in the 26.6 compared to the v26.3. Version 27 of the software starts allows the use of AVX which is only available on SB CPU's currently.

phoney -- Nice guide on the hp cloud service but I can write it faster:) (from the BOINC wiki) I had to learn how to do it for my ubuntu server last year. (Can't have equipment not crunching you know)

Using ubuntu 10.10:

If you are running 64 bit Linux and 64 bit BOINC then you might have a problem with projects that issue 32 bit applications rather than 64 bit applications. To allow 32 bit applications to run on 64 bit Linux you must install 32 bit versions of certain shared libraries (as explained here)
Code:
sudo apt-get install ia32-libs libstdc++6 freeglut3
Then install main client:
Code:
sudo apt-get install boinc-client
Preferably reboot, otherwise restart boinc-client
Code:
sudo /etc/init.d/boinc-client restart
Then add your project(s) using -- your authentication number is the account key
Code:
boinccmd --project_attach URL auth
Test if boinc is running with
Code:
boinccmd --get_state

Here is a list of BOINC commands to check status, add projects, etc.

One last thing to keep in mind is if you do any typos in either your account key OR the website BOINC will think you added a project but it won't get any work because it won't recognize you as a user. If you misspelled the website like use .com instead of .org, You can delete this project though using the following command:

Code:
boinccmd --project URL detach

Use the misspelled website if thats what you entered wrong.

Let me know if I forgot something or if someone needs help setting it up further.

phoenicis / SazanEyes -- Are you sticking with PSP for the forseeable future?

Clearly my google fu isn't what it used to be. I haven't tried it but all that looks much more straightforward. Just a couple of things though, sudo can be omitted with HP Cloud as you login as root and I did try the apt-get install ia32-libs libstdc++6 freeglut3 approach but it didn't solve the GFAM problem. I dunno, maybe I fluffed the installation.

phoenicis / SazanEyes -- Are you sticking with PSP for the forseeable future?

Speaking for myself, I reckon the gap to 3rd is too big for just the three of us so I'm going to let some rigs run for a few days in aid of buffer building but the majority of cores are already moving on to pastures new. Feels odd looking at HFM for bigadv tpfs again.

Got 8 cores on the HP Cloud crunching WCG GFAM units. I'm going to let my FAH SMP units complete tonight and switch over my remaining 12 cores tomorrow.

Thanks for the guide Phoenicis!!! I had problems getting GFAM units to run too. I totally forgot about cc_config.xml.
