I'm just curious if any of you have used a Datto Alto in a small virtual environment. It looks kind of interesting, particularly the ability to run the VM over a VPN to their data center. Love/Hate?

I have a lot of SIRIS out and a few ALTO. The ALTO is a little slow if you try to do to many things, it is an atom after all.

The only other thing is if you do not have it attached to an Internet connection you cannot virtualize but you have figured that out!

Really I have no complaints, datto has good products and they are very quick at getting issues resolved or at least this is my experience as a reseller.

The company I work for is a Datto vendor. Very good product.

Go with the siris if you can afford it. Let me know if you have any questions.

Eh we put a few out that and I was under impressed. Before we put datto out there I actually designed and built our own BDR type unit and we have better luck with it.

On the flip side, with Siris you do get a license of ontrack exchange recovery which was great software.

we just signed up a client with a datto device. its a datto siris device IIRC.

i'd love to support it, but it falls outside of the scope of software we support, and in order to get access to the backend there's a reseller fee and training we would need to go through.

unfortunately we already have our own backup solution and MSP software that we use, so it'd be pointless for us to get this for this one client.

it is a very robust appliance from what i can tell, the ability to spin up a VM minutes after a hardware failure would sell me on it, and this one is an on-premise device for 2 server's.

i just wish we could support it, but alas, not my decision to make unfortunately.

You do not need training, they will give you more promo deals if you take training, the only real thing that training is needed for is if you buy servers from them in there data centers and charge your own fees. That cloud storage requires training the devices are a choice.

I love these things, they work, I've used them in a bare metal restore, supports great, and they are low maintenance. Plus I can request my data back as a vmdk.
