According to C|Net, the European Union's second highest court is expected to hand down a ruling on whether the European Commission was right to find that Microsoft violated antitrust laws. The ruling is expected on September 17th.

September 17 is the final working day before the retirement of Court of First Instance President Bo Vesterdorf, who is presiding over the landmark case. The ruling is expected to clarify whether the European Commission can continue to pursue the case, or whether it must pull back and permit Microsoft to continue its business practices.

You would hope that they could find a clue somewhere in the number of EU versions of Windows that are sold vs. the normal 'bundled' versions.

Basically, an EU court is going to determine whether or not to globally embarrass the EC?

Hmm let's see.

The EU loves to treat MS like their own personal ATM and now they are ruling if they should fine them some more? Ya I wonder what's going to happen there.

Microsoft has paid enough in fines to buy the whole dame continent. :D
It should be renamed the Windows Union.

MS would do well to give them the finger and pull out of a bad situation and leave the EU with Linux. (Not taking a shot at Linux here just making note of the impact MS has on the industry)

LMAO....how much have they paid in fines to the EU so far?

wow...I can't imagine what that would do.
I imagine there might be quite a bit of uproar at first, but then development on Linux might speed up as well.
I think as long as MS is making more money than it is being fined for, they will continue to sell their product there.

I know there are regions of the EU that are just teaming with hot babes, but I don't think even MSFT could afford to buy the Dame Continent.

I think we're past 1bn Euros in fines now. I do find all the charges leveled against MSFT (an APPL) to be laughably vague. They should just properly name the infractions: not being from the EU.

Where do you get this? I mean the fines and EU going after MS might be bull and all but please dont pull that "not from EU" card as its just not true..

These are few amounts in one other antitrust case (in euros)
Siemens (germany) 396.56 million
Mitsubishi Electric (japan) 118.6 million
Toshiba (japan) 90.9 million
Alstom in France 65 million
Areva (france) 53.55
+ a lot of smaller fines to different companies in the same field

Then therese also kone (they make elevators) that got a 170 mil fine in other antitrust case (finland).. also Hoffmann La Roche paid 460+ million in 2001.

I can understand if you argue that the reasons behind MS case will not hold water (its not your average antitrust case and I think the reasons for going after MS are stupid) but to just put it in a "EU hates US companies" is wrong..
