We have a server on a co-loc, but have a need to throw a really quick and dirty forum app to test a new theory. Instead of going through a few weeks of working through on-site admins to set things up and work into a database, I'm looking for a quick and dirty file-based forum program, such as one that uses XML files.

I was just playing around with dcforum which looked nice, but its insistence on cgi-bin threw me for a loop. Even as sysadmin and webmaster, that's one folder that had locked permissions and I'd have to run through the local staff to get worked out, which I'm trying to avoid.
 
Can you use CGI or have a server module, or nothing at all? You'd need some type of server side technology to actually process data and update the flat file.

YaBB is another flat file forum written in Perl, but I'm not sure if it'll work for you either.
 
I'm not even sure if there is a CGI or Perl module installed. A vendor has control over the Apache software install. So, I'm trying to get all of the solutions in front of me and work through which ones would work.
 
We'll need to know what you have available. You mention Apache, so ASP is out. Do you have PHP? Perl? CGI? We can't give any suggestions until we know at least that much.
 
Linux based, Apache w/ PHP, Perl and CGI are unknown at right now but can be installed if needed.
 
With a modern PHP install, SQLite is probably an option - using it might expand your options somewhat.
