Data storage system solution Acer or custom build

I am looking at the following WHS server for storing downloaded media and dvd and blu ray rips

acer Aspire Easystore H340 Intel Atom 1.6Ghz 2GB 1TB GBLAN 4 Bay Hotswap Windows Home Server $349.99

I am also looking at a custom build WHS server. but it will be hard to beat the price of Acer after WHS OEM version price is included in there + 1TB hard drive.

Acer has a empty PCI-e slot, I am assuming that I can add a raid controller card and something like this

to expand the acer if necessary. it also has a esata port but I don't think PM is supported. but I am not planning to use any hardware raid. WHS build in software mirror is sufficient for what i need.

Any comment or advise is highly appreciated
 
I recently bought that same thing. I caught it when Newegg was throwing in 1TB WD Green drives for free with them for 2TB total (the drive came from a different place, guess what? Died within the week :p).

I dont have any bad things at all to say about it. Wegotserved.com has a forum dedicated specifically to it, not terribly active, but has some info about adding additional storage to it. The acer site and the manual are pretty much useless, fyi, so do a lot of reading on WHS first. (There was talk of some expansion boxes working through esata)

Just looking at the size of the thing (its small!) i think you'd have a hard time putting anything into it. It does not have any place to plug in a monitor if you manage to brick the thing like my harddrive problem almost did.

That said, i dont regret buying it, so far its been really easy. When I finish off my student loans and move out i WILL be building my own in a much more expansive case and leaving this for my parents for photos and music backup/sharing. I'd rather have everything in one spot than have 2 satellite systems connected by a small cord.

Hopefully I helped and didnt make it more ambiguious!

I thought it comes with the recovery CD to reinstall WHS if the 1TB drive gets corrupted
 
I looked at the Acer and other competitors and decided to just build my own linux NAS box. Bought a coolermaster centurion + ps, g33 based board (cheap from a friend), couple gigs of ram and an e1400 cpu. Installed linux and RAID5 5x 1.5tb drives. Still around the same price as the Acer when you factor in the free 1tb drive. But I still have space for 7 more drives in my case if I want to expand :)

I am not familiar with linux. I wanted a WHS for centralized backup.

I am leaning more towards building custom now.
 
It does come with the restore disk. But after having run dskchk 3 times on the system drive and being unable to see the real time progress of it, i'd still rather have the ability to throw a monitor on it for emergencies. That said, it wasnt my system drive that broke, it was a storage disk. :) Its been working flawlessly for a week straight of on time now that i have taken the bad hdd out.

I think I am gonna build a WHS box. I decided aganist the Acer

I run some numbers and I can probably do it in the 300- 400 range.
