I recently upgraded my dad's computer from 98 to 2000pro. Prior to installation he made a back up of all his music, taxes etc. After I formatted and installed 2000 he realized he forgot to backup almost all of his pictures:rolleyes: . So I'm wondering if there is some program that can dig up his lost stuff. The drive hasn't been used since install.Any help would be great!

More than likely not.

The reason being that your new data on the drive has probably written over the files, or some of them, at the very least.

You will not be able to restore whatever is left yourself, you'd have to send it out to a data recovery service, and you're looking at big bucks spent on that.

Actually there are utilities to do this, they just tend to be somewhat expensive. Recovery services use the same utils in situations like this. Anyway, if you dig around there are a number of different products you could try. Just be advised that because the drive has had another filesystem type and a fair number of new files put on it that you'd be lucky to get 2/3rds of the data off.

At the very least, use this as a learning experience never to trust users who say they're backed up; anytime I work on someone's PC, I make a full backup of its drive contents first, this type of BS happens so often it sickens me. If you take precautions then there's no way they can come back and blame you for their oversight. This goes for friends, family, and clients.
