I would like to know if its possible to recover data after a SSD has been formated using the built in windows 7 tool?

i have some excel files i desperately need to access on the formated drive but dont know how to go about doing it, if its even possible at all

You could probably give Recuva a shot.

Chances are the SSD didn't re-write all the data on the disk, however as with any recovery it's best to not use it except for attempted recovery purposes as a secondary drive. The way SSD's work make these things, unpredictable, to say the least. Some may have better success than others. It's up to the controller on the drive itself whether or not that data was zeroed out.

It's worth a shot. Just don't expect any miracles. One of the positives and downfalls of SSD's. If you're security minded it has an internal way or wiping data, if you're not security minded it could be that sinking feeling without a backup. This is why backing up is so important.

Depending on how long it has been deleted, maybe an hour after it's deleted you might be able to recover it, longer than that and its probably safe to say its gone forever.

You see after you delete a file, windows simply forgets where on the SSD it was written but the data is still there. This is how traditional drives operate and why some data is able to recovered. Now modern windows does what's called background garbage collection/Trim, where it will zero out files that have been deleted using the OS to boost write performance. So if you just standard delete it and let your computer sit it will get zero'ed after some time.

Probably gone forever.

You might try to get some professional recovery. I think those types of people get requests all the time.

If you delete a file on a TRIM enabled SSD, the data is gone for good.
Windows does also TRIM full partitions, but I'm not sure right now whether that happens on format or on creation.
But one of those definitely issues TRIM, you could feel that delay on earlier SSDs while it was not there on HDDs.
