Does it detect in another machine?
Is it a mechanical malfunction (clicking, strange noises?)
Try something like Hitachi's drive fitness test, and test the drive?
GetDataBack and Recuva are good programs for data recovery.

Well, Typically, yes.. however, first issue i've had like this and i really have no idea what the fix is - therefore, i dont know what details to include.
Let me find out. It's actually my brother in laws HDD. Will advise.. Thanks for the leads on the apps.

he will need to open the case and see if it's definitely coming from the hard drive. If it's definitely clicking and from the hard drive, he is most likely screwed.

It usually means physical damage to the heads or platters. If there's super important data on it, you can get the professionals to recover the data - but it's going to cost a bundle.
Or you could try the freezer method - but it's a hit or miss kind of thing.
Oh, if it is the drive clicking, I wouldn't keep trying to turn it on more than necessary because you might be causing more damage every time the heads try to access the data.

DO NOT OPEN IT! As soon as you open it the platters will collect dust particles and it could ruin any chances of data recovery. Just send it to a data recovery company like Gillware for recovery. Any reputable recovery company will evaluate it for free and let you agree to charges only after seeing what they can recover.
