I have 2 hard drives. hard drive a had a bunch of junk I didn't want
anymore so I wanted to re-install windows and format it. hard drive b
had important files that I wanted to keep. when I went to re-install
windows on hard drive a i accidentally selected windows to be installed
on hard drive b. is there any way I can recover these lost files?
that is recovering the files from hard drive b even though it
was formatted and windows was installed on it.

you can try something like GetDataBack form www.runtime.org.
Whatever you do, I highly recommend NOT using the drive anymore until you are ready to recover the data.

this is what I use the NTFS local drives only is $50

it works really well.

but some of your data has been erased when XP installed its files over the top of them.

next time make sure and unplug any drive you are not installing XP on when reinstalling.....

not only are you keeping the risk of formatting the wrong drive but XP also can put necessary files on the other drive and if you ever remove the other drive your OS is corrupted....

Normally I'd recommend GetDataBack myself, but there's also Recuva, http://www.recuva.com, which is free. I can't say how well it works, but hey it's free so download it and give it a shot. If it works, great, if not www.runtime.org might just save your data.

Stellar Phoenix FAT & NTFS data recovery software will help you in recovering your lost data.
Its a file & partition recovery utility that helps in recovering all important data lost after accidental format, virus problems, software malfunction, file/directory deletion, or even a sabotage!
You can download the demo version of this partition recovery utility. Start scanning your hard drive if you are able to see your data then you can save it by getting the full version.
Best of Luck
