I've got a friend with a business who didn't have a good backup solution in place, and is now hosed. I haven't looked at it, it might be as simple as slaving the drive up and copying over whatever she needs; but it sounds to me like there may actually be some corruption.

If it's not hardware in nature, could anyone recommend a good scanning program to see if it's recoverable? We're willing to take a minimal risk that a software solution might hose it further, so we'd like to give it a shot. If there is an issue and that doesn't work, off to Data Recovery Labs it goes.

I fully understand the danger, but does anyone have some experiece with software data recovery solutions?
 
Phoenix has never let me down but its not free. GetDataBack seems to get recommended fairly often as does File Scavenger. Haven't used either of them but IIRC most threads end with "woohoo it worked" so I'd feel fairly good about either of them also.


 
Not a fan of Spinrite due to the nature of many of the hard drive failures I've seen as of late. I own a copy of GetDataBack and it has been by far the best program I've used for this purpose.
