Anyone know any free or good data recovery software? A friend of mine formatted his wrong drive suppose to be his OS drive instead he formated his files/backup drive. I use to have a software that can recovery some but not all the files but i don't remember the name of it anymore. So any of you got any suggestion? Prefer free is possible =) Thanks
 
TestDisk is my #1 recommendation for free data recovery software.

Most of the "data recovery software" for Windows is simply some undelete tools and they don't always work as advertised (no surprise there, really). GetDataBack has some good reviews and I've seen it recommended on many occasions (commercial product, however); R-Studio (my real choice but it's commercial and I paid a princely sum for it years ago) is THE software in my opinion. Also, OnTrack EasyRecovery is highly recommended as well (and also commercial).

But TestDisk runs outside of Windows off a bootable CD and gets the job done quite well. And it's free, of course, and open source as well.
 
Had this exact same thing happen to me a couple of years back. As long as it wasn't a full format and he hasn't touched the disk, most recovery tools should be able to piece together most of the files.
 
Give Disk Digger a try, it's free. It takes a few hours to run but I was able to find traces of dozens of files on a disk that had physically been 'scraped' clean. Couldn't recover them but at least it found them ;)
 
alright thank you all for all the suggestion. I'll play around with these and hopefully i can help him recover some of his document.
